OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 63 – SPAWN/BATMAN

Episode 63 – Spawn/Batman

Welcome to the sixty-third episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.

This time out Andy and Mike continue their informal series of episodes looking at Batman stories where he teams up with a character from another fictional universe.  In 1994, Frank Miller and Todd McFarlane teamed up to produce the first official crossover between Image Comics and DC Comics.  Frank, for good or ill, redefined Batman for the next two, going on three decades.

Todd drew several chapters of Batman: Year Two.

So, they both had at least some experience with the Dark Knight.

Todd also had a creator owned character that was setting the sales charts on fire called Spawn.  So, the two creators teamed up and produced something that could definitely be called a comic book.

Snarky?  Yes, but this comic was hardly Watchmen and it definiely wasn’t The Dark Knight Returns.

Actually, Andy and Mike give the book a fair shake.  They talk about the story, such as it is, and the comic book culture that produced it.  Mike seems to think that part of this episode was therapy because he definitely had conflicted feelings on the story.  The guys laughed.  They cried.  The comic became a part of them.

Not really.  But they had some fun for a little over an hour.

Below are the covers and select pages from the comic discussed during this epiosde.

Andy and Mike want your feedback on this episode so they can read it on an upcoming show!  You even have options in how you leave your feedback.  The most direct way is to leave a comment right here on the site.  You can also send all questions, concerns, fears and trepidations to overlookeddarkknight@gmail.com.  Then there’ the Facebook page, where you can also leave a Batman related question for Andy and Mike to answer at the beginning of the show.  If you talk about this show on the social medias please include a #overlookeddk so the guys know where to find it.

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 259 – SEPTEMBER 1996 PART 2

Episode 259 – September 1996 Part 2

Welcome to the two hundredth and fifty-ninth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Mike and Jeff conclude their coverage of the books with a September 1996 cover date and kick off their coverage of the three-part The Bottle City storyline! Part 1 happens in Action Comics #725, where otherworldly beings keep picking fights with Superman finally discovering that the being behind the attacks is Tolos! Meanwhile, Lois is struggling in her new foreign correspondent role and Perry decides to tell Alice and Keith about his cancer diagnosis.  Part 2 goes down in Superman: The Man of Steel #60, where Tolos possesses the body of a Daxamite to once again fight Superman, but that doesn’t go according to plan given the weakness that Daxamites have. Also, Perry tells Alice he has cancer in one of the worst ways possible.

After that, the boys talk about what happened in the rest of the DC Universe starting with the Superman related books. Those books include Steel #30, Superboy #31, Superboy and the Ravers #1, Showcase ’96 #8, Supergirl #1, Alpha Centurion Special #1, and Justice League: A Midsummer’s Nightmare #1. They also trip hammer through select issues of the DCU, including some of the Batman titles (most of which were hip deep in the Legacy storyline), Hitman,
