Episode 64: World’s Finest 1990

Welcome to the sixty-fourth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

This time out Mike and Jeff finally get around to covering the World’s Finest mini-series from 1990 and the final result is…well, the final result is a bit more casual than the usual episode of this show. Sure they talk about the story and the art and the whole Batman and Superman trading cities thing. They also discuss why they really didn’t like the series all that much. In between all of that, though, they go on a number of digressions that go all over the map and generally have more fun than should be allowed.

During the episode Mike and Jeff discuss the back covers to this series.  Here they are.  Sorry there isn’t more in the way of scans this time out but Prestige Format books are hard to flatten without pretty much destroying the book.

Next Week: The Sinbad Contract. Jeff and Mike have a lot of good things to say about this one.

Episode 63: The Dan Jurgens Interview

Welcome to the sixty-third episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

This week Mike and Jeff have something special for you. Instead of covering the World’s Finest mini-series like they’ve been promising for a few weeks now the boys decided to release the interview they conducted a few weeks ago with the one, the only, DAN JURGENS!

Jeff and Mike “sat down” with him for a little over an hour and had a fun and informative conversation. Topics include how Dan got sucked into the world of comics, the behind the scenes origin for Booster Gold, the early days of Dan working on Superman, destructible cape vs. indestructible cape, Lois vs. Lana,  Day of the Krypton Man, Lobo, Soul Search, Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite and the shocking truth behind why all of the cab rides in Metropolis were $6.50.

Mike and Jeff would like to thank Dan for being very generous with his time. They hope to have him back soon.

Next Week: Batman and Superman team up in the World’s Finest mini-series. For reals this time. No seriously. They aren’t putting it or The Sinbad Contract off at all. They promise.

Dan Jurgens has his own website which you can find by following this link.

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 62: MORE E-MAILS

Episode 62: More E-mails

Welcome to the sixty-second episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

Due to technical difficulties the episode you should be listening to went bye-bye. So no World’s Finest this week. Instead Mike and Jeff roll out another edition of the From Crisis to Crisis Mailbag where the boys read YOUR e-mails. Highlights include how Mike and Jeff organize their comics, thoughts on the fate of Amanda McCoy, Mike’s limited knowledge of The Twilight Zone, why you sometimes can’t go home again, a discussion on what state Metropolis is in, what one of the show’s younger listeners thinks of “recent” events in the Superman books, why Bibbo is awesome, what words Mike can’t pronounce and much more!

Quick note; Mike mentions a listener’s podcast called Being Carter Hall. One problem; it’s not a podcast. It is a blog. Check it out either way.

Next Week: Batman and Superman team up in the World’s Finest mini-series. For reals this time.

No scans this week but they too will return next week.

You can subscribe to the show in two ways. First there is the RSS Feed and there is also the iTunes link .

If you want to comment on the show or contact the hosts you can always private message Mike and Jeff, at the Superman Homepage, leave comments here or at the Homepage or here or email them by clicking this link.  All questions, concerns, fears, trepidations and cheap shots are welcome. The guys will try to incorporate e-mails into the episodes once the show gets rolling.

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 61: SEPTEMBER 1990

Episode 61: September 1990

Welcome to the sixty-first episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

After another week long hiatus the boys are back with more Superman goodness. This time out Mike and Jeff take a look at the Superman books with the September 1990 cover date. Soul Search continues in Superman #47 where Superman faces off against an old enemy and Gangbuster enters the fray. Adventures of Superman #470 has the last chapter of Soul Search and a supporting cast member that has been with the book since the beginning of the revamp loses his life. The Toyman returns in Action Comics #657 and we learn what happened to Schott after the events of Superman #13. Finally there’s Superboy: The Comic Book #8, which is a Bizarro story.

It’s a silly Bizarro story but it is a Bizarro story nonetheless.

You get all of that and the usual Elsewhere in the DCU and Elsewhere, Elsewhere features.

And now…onto the scans for the week!

Episode 60: August 1990

Welcome to the sixtieth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

This time out the boys discuss the Superman books that came out with the August 1990 cover date on them. In Superman #46 the Man of Steel teams-up with two heroes from Infinity, Inc. to fight the new Terra-Man. Adventures of Superman #469 begins with a serious public display of affection before two old enemies show up to get revenge on…Clark Kent! Then Soul Search begins in Action Comics #656 with Superman going to…Hades to fight for the souls of Jerry White and Jimmy Olsen. This is all followed by a quick look at Superboy: The Comic Book #7, Elsewhere in the DCU and the Elsewhere, Elsewhere feature.

Quick note; From Crisis to Crisis will be one or two days late next week due to a scheduling conflict. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up on that.

Another quick note: Mike states at one point that the Superboy comic the boys discuss this month is the last one penciled by Jim Mooney. This is not the case. He pencils the next issue as well.

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 59: ANNUALS 1990

Episode 59: The 1990 Superman Related Annuals

Welcome to the fifty-ninth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

Last week the guys recorded an extra long episode. This week they go in the opposite direction for reasons explained at the end of the episode. Before that, though, Jeff and Mike look at the two Superman related annuals from 1990. The first is Adventures of Superman Annual #2, which guest stars the L.E.G.I.O.N. and, despite having a rather abrupt ending, was a good, old fashioned super-hero team-up complete with a couple of really solid fight scenes. This story continues in L.E.G.I.O.N. ’90 Annual #1 where Vril Dox, Jr. finally faces off against his father…Brainiac! The problem is that the younger Dox wants to kill his old man and the Man of Steel isn’t having any of that. After that the boys read some e-mails until they had to unexpectedly stop. Thankfully there was enough material recorded to make a full sized episode and the boys promise that there will be more e-mails next time.

Check out the scans below the cut!

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 58: JULY 1990

Episode 58: July 1990

Welcome to the fifty-eighth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

You might want to grab a cup of coffee and a snack this week, folks because Mike and Jeff sure had a lot to say in this week’s episode. This is rather appropriate when you consider that the books they discuss this week, all of which have the July 1990 cover date, are extra sized with eight additional pages each. In Superman #46 the Man of Steel faces off against an Oto shaman as Pete Ross is held hostage. Then in Adventures of Superman #468 we get the return of Hank Henshaw and a mopey Clark Kent. Finally, as far as the main books are concerned, there is Action Comics #655 where Lois gets into some trouble with a para-military group hiding out in a familiar habitat. The extras in each of these issues are quite cool. In the Superman issue we get Jimmy Olsen’s diary, in Adventures of Superman there’s the Man of Steel’s journal and in Action we get Ma Kent’s photo album.

But that’s not all! There’s also Superboy: The Comic Book #6, which is much better than the previous two issues. and features Superboy’s arch enemy Lex Luthor!  This is followed by Elsewhere in the DCU and the Elsewhere, Elsewhere segments. In between all of that there are major digressions; some on point, some not so much.

We have a few more scans this week.  The first is the Superman is Mad as Hell ad that was in the back of this month’s worth of books.  Mike really likes this ad.

More scans below the cut!

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 57: JUNE 1990

Episode 57: June 1990

Welcome to the fifty-seventh episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

This week Superman receives a visitor from Gotham City as the Dark Knight is over Metropolis. Yes it is your two favorite heroes together in one adventure that stretches through all three of the main Superman books this month. The story begins in Superman #44 where Intergang makes a move against Cat Grant and a certain radioactive ring piques Batman’s interest and leads to him traveling to the Big Apricot. The action and intrigue continues in Adventures of Superman #467 where Superman and Batman finally team-up, Batman meets Gangbuster, Lex Luthor meets Bruce Wayne for the first time again and Intergang strikes again! The story concludes in Action Comics #654 where the fight is taken to Intergang, Batman reveals everything about the Kryptonite ring to Superman and Superman places the ultimate trust in the Dark Knight.

But that’s not all, folks! We have Superboy: The Comic Book #5 that sees three teenagers from the future coming to visit Superboy and acting like complete jerks. We have a story in Secret Origins #49 where the Newsboy Legion gets into all kind of hi-jinks. We have Elsewhere in the DCU and Elsewhere, Elsewhere. Plus the usual banter and arguments and Mike even gets on a soapbox a time or two.

Oh, and before we forget Mike reads a letter that was printed in the Superboy issue by the Superman Homepage’s own Barry Freiman, which the guys thought was just plain awesome.

As promised here’s that final page from Action Comics #654 that Jeffrey suggested Mike scan.  It’s pretty keen.

Starting with this episode we thought it might be fun to include scans of some of the more interesting ads that were mentioned during the course of the episode.  First up this week is the Dick Tracy ad that Mike and Jeff liked so much.

Next and finally for this week is the subscription ad and if Mike can remember to do so and finds the time he might go ahead and scan past Superman related subscription ads because some of them are quite cool.

Next week: Superman in Smallville, the return of a certain doomed astronaut and Lois gets into trouble yet again. Plus, a diary, a journal and a scrapbook.

Seriously, let us know what you think.

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 56: MAY 1990

Episode 56: May 1990

Welcome to the fifty-sixth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

You would think that after a month like April 1990 that the Superman creators would want to take it easy and relax a bit. Well you would be WRONG! While the month starts quiet May 1990 builds and builds and ends in sixteen different types of awesome and this makes Mike and Jeff very happy. First up in Superman #43, which features the final fate of Jimmy Olsen’s mother and the introduction of a “Kryptonite Man”. Then in Adventures of Superman #466 four space explorers are hit with cosmic rays which changes them forever in most fantastic ways and boy does it end badly. Oh, and a major character is introduced in this issue so keep an ear out for that. Then there’s Action Comics #653 where Amanda McCoy FINALLY confronts Clark Kent complete with a certain piece of jewelry that might pose a problem for the Man of Steel. Finally there’s Superboy: The Comic Book #4, which is pretty awful all things considered. So you get all of this in addition to Elsewhere in the DCU, Elsewhere Elsewhere and YOUR e-mails.

In the episode we read an e-mail from listener Matt Linkous.  Matt was nice enough to send along two scans from a gift book that contained a two page origin of Superman.  We thought they were pretty keen so here they are.

Thanks for pointing these images our way, Matt.

Next week: A certain Caped Crusader comes to town as Intergang makes its move!

Next week: The fate of Jimmy’s mother! Four fantastic astronauts are caught in the world’s strangest accident! Amanda McCoy confronts Clark Kent! Come back same super time, same super website.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

DAY OF THE KRYPTON MAN concludes this week and Mike and Jeff are fifteen different types of excited to talk about it. In Superman #42 the Man of Steel becomes the Man From Krypton as Kal-El/Draaga Round 2 begins and you get to hear Jeff and Mike sing a classic theme song! The fight continues in Adventures of Superman #465 with the world watching as Kal-El prepares to grant Draaga’s Death Rite! It all concludes in Action Comics #652 as Kal-El takes Jonathan and Martha Kent to the Fortress of Solitude and battles the entity ultimately responsible for his recent behavior. Finally the boys take a look at Superboy: The Comic Book #3 as a famed comedian kidnaps a famed historical figure. The only problem; Lana Lang is kidnapped as well! Plus there is the usual Elsewhere in the DCU and Elsewhere in the Real World features plus e-mails!

And remember…YOU!
