Episode 2: All-Star Comics #58
In this episode, hosts Michael Bailey and Scott H. Gardner take an in-depth look at the 1976 return of the Justice Society of America in the pages of their original title — All-Star Comics!! Specifically, they review issue #58, also deliver a bit of JSA news, character spotlight Power Girl, and wrap the whole thing up with a hilarious discussion of the classic comic book ads found in this issue — such as Hostess Fruit Pies, The Six Million Dollar Man Action Figure, and the Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle!!

You’ve indicated you won’t be covering the JLA/JSA crossovers per se, but I wonder about other appearances by Justice Society members. Powergirl’s three-issue run in Showcase (#97-99), for instance, is written by Paul Levitz and penciled by Joe Staton, the eventual All-Star/Adventure Comics creative team, so it seems like a natural fit — not to mention the appearances by Jay Garrick and Alan Scott in those same issues. I’m more than happy with whatever the two of you have decided, of course, but I thought I’d take the opportunity to ask. Kudos for the excellent work to this point.

Hello Fellas,
Just wanted to write a line and tell you that I am enjoying the new TALES OF THE JUSTICE SOCIETY podcast. One item you might to mention on the show is that there are two trade paperbacks of these early issues of All-Star Comics that you are discussing, called “Justice Society Vols. 1 and 2.
Also, there is a website that is showcasing the DC 100 PAGE SPECTACULARS that came out in the 70’s and many of them showcase the Justice League and also reprints of classic Justice Society and Seven Soldiers of Victory stories. Definitely worth a look at

You mentioned on the last show that Roy Thomas is on your wish list as a guest, how about tracking down Gerry Conway? Being that he wrote so many of the original stories, he would be a natural. Also, don’t forget Paul Levitz when you get to his issues.
In closing, on show number two you read a bunch of the ads in the comic, this is a great idea by the way, and read the ad for the first DC Comics Convention. I was there in 1976! The Hotel Commodore was an old hotel at the time, but that was part of the charm. I still have the program book that reprinted some rare Neal Adams pencils for a Superman story. I think that two years prior, Marvel threw their first NYC Comic Con and I was there also, ah memories! Those were the days!
Keep up the good work,
David D
