Episode 3: All-Star Comics #59
WHY CAN’T SUPER VILLAINS SIMPLY BE CONTENT TO ROB BANKS AND LEAVE EARTH’S ORBIT AND IT’S SUPPLY OF HOSTESS CAKES ALONE?!
In this hilarious episode, hosts Michael Bailey and Scott H. Gardner read some listener feedback, take a peek at a portion of a classic JSA adventure, review All-Star Comics issue #59, deliver some JSA news, character spotlight one of Scott’s all-time favorite comic book heroes, the Earth-2 Robin, examining both the similarities as well as the vast differences between him and his Earth-1 counterpart, and finally wrap the whole thing up with a fascinating discussion of the classic and often zany comic book ads found in these great old issues — such as The Battle of The Century and The Cupcake Caper!!

I find it refreshing that All-Star Comics was revived with a “mere” two-part story, a fact that only accentuates the difference between the comics of 1976 and those of today. I’m sure most everyone knows the reasons why current superhero titles depend on four- or six-issue arcs, so I won’t rehearse the details here. Suffice it to say that it’s a welcome change of pace to read a comic that gets on with business, establishing the new team within thirty-five combined pages — less than two of today’s twenty-two page stories.
