ACQUISITIONS – 07/07/2010

While I have stopped buying the monthly Superman titles I haven’t stopped working on my Superman collection.  These posts are meant to show off those acquisitions.

About eight years ago I made a concerted effort to build up my Pre-Crisis Superman collection.  It was an era that I had never given much thought to or wanted to focus on but I figured if I was going to be a fan of the character I should try to learn as much as I could about all of his incarnations.  Of all of the titles that have been hard to find Superman Family has been one of the toughest.  I don’t know if the print runs were low or what but it’s hard to find them, hard to find them at a good price and hard to find them in good condition.  A week or so back I lucked into a lot on eBay that fit both the good price and the good condition criteria.  It was a 20 or so issue lot mainly in the 190’s and 200’s of the book.  I scanned all of the covers and over the course of a few posts I’ll share them here because some of are quite awesome.

Personally I would hate to be surrounded by clones of Jimmy Olsen and attacked by my action figures.  I really feel for Superman in this one.

Covers like this are just awesome.  I don’t know if the story is any good but the promise of a throw down between Superboy and Superman is too good to pass up.

I like future covers like this, plus it is a nice piece of art.  This is one of my favorites, at least prior to reading the stories.

Unfortunately that is all I have time for today.  I’ll post the rest of them soon.  Hope you liked them.

More to follow…

Those clones of Jimmy look pretty bad-a**, like they really mean business….!

The Supergirl vs. Superboy fight looks awesome, if the cover is any indication. My money would be on the Maid of Might, but I suppose either (a) the Boy wins or (b) they come to a draw or (c) it’s the effect of polka-dot kryptonite or somesuch…. 😉

How long did “Superman Family” run? I gather it’s Bronze Age, chronologically speaking… but are the stories generally closer to Silver Age stuff (which I like, but am not so interested in collecting) or “Kryptonite Nevermore”? I really want some more 70s Superman that has that Bronze Age “edge” to it, where it’s still mostly for fun but is creeping toward a more modern sensibility. Make sense? Any suggestions?

Thanks for posting these, and for reinvigorating your blog. It’s a keeper. 🙂

Oh, also meant to add: Why is Future Jimmy dressed like Caesar Romero’s Joker??!

Too bad they do not have any comics with large page counts at deals like these.
Going by the cover the Supergirl vs Superboy fight looks epic but know how old covers can full you. Guessing it was a time travel story.

Mechanical Master got a wacked out costume looks like tried to copy superboy duds but failed and btw what is on his head.

Biblio Mike is right Jimmy so looks like the Joker.

Covers like these make me want to get back to my Silver Age Superman reading as soon as possible.

I had 194 in my collection, but unfortunately most if not all my childhood comics were “lost” when we moved out of Brooklyn. So my mom says. I’m working hard to replace them all from memory.
