EPISODE 6: JULY 1983

Episode 6: July 1983

This time out I’m covering the Batman titles that came out with a July 1983 cover date.  In Batman #361 the Man-Bat story wraps up and we learn that Jason Todd’s reasoning skills leave a little to be desired.  We also get the return of someone that will become a major supporting character as well as a major thorn in Commissioner Gordon’s side.  Then in Detective Comics #528 that character leads the search for the Savage Skull, who isn’t dead after all.  Finally I start my coverage of Batman and the Outsiders with the 16 page preview story from Brave and the Bold #200.  Things get wrapped up with Same Bat Time, Different Bat Title and some of your e-mails!

Subscribing to the show is easy and fun.  Well…it is easy at least.  The RSS feed link can be found here or you can subscribe through iTunes here.  The e-mail address for the show is [email protected]. Write in.  I like getting feedback.

Next time: I cover the August 1983 books which include Batman #362, Detective Comics #529 and Batman and the Outsiders #1.

EPISODE 5: JUNE 1983

Episode 5: June 1983

We now resume our normal programming.

I sincerely hope that everyone had a safe and happy Halloween (well, those of you who celebrate it anyway) and that you enjoyed last week’s holiday themed episode.  This week I continue my Batman reading project by not only welcoming “new” Bat-writer Doug Moench but also by looking at the main Bat-books with a June 1983 cover date. In Batman #360 the Dark Knight has to discover the identity of the Savage Skull while over in Detective Comics #527 Man-Bat returns and he is bat-**** crazy, if you’ll pardon the pun.    I also tell you where else Batman appeared that month (including World’s Finest, which continues to suck) and read a handful of your e-mails.

EPISODE 4: HALLOWEEN 2011

Episode 4: Halloween 2011

Welcome back to Bailey’s Batman Podcast, everyone!  This week I present something off the beaten path.  The original plan was to cover the June 1983 books but I got to looking at the calendar and realized that Halloween is fast approaching.  I love Halloween so I thought it might be fun to do a special episode focusing on a Batman story (or two) that has a supernatural or horror element to it (or them).

To that end I am going back all the way to 1939 for two stories that are actually parts one and two of a larger tale.  Detective Comics issues 31 and 32 featured the first and second chapters of a story that has come to be known as Batman vs. The Vampire where Batman fights for the life and soul of his fiance Julie Madison against the Mad Monk.  It is…goofy but a lot of fun at the same time.

During the episode I mention that the (unfortunately) on hiatus Legends of the Batman podcast (hosted by Michael Bradley and Michael Kaiser) covered these stories as well.  You can find those episodes by going here and here.  If you haven’t already listened to the show do so because I enjoyed it quite a bit and hope that it comes back someday.

No really.  This time I am going to actually cover those books.

EPISODE 3: MAY 1983

Episode 3: May 1983

And I am back.

Sorry about the whole four weeks without an episode thing, folks.  It couldn’t be helped.  Work has been something of a busy nightmare and this show suffered for it.  It will probably happen again but I will do my best to see that it doesn’t.

In this slightly longer than usual episode I talk about the main Batman books that came out with a May 1983 cover date.  In Batman #359 Killer Croc makes a bid to lead the gangs of Gotham and gets less than a welcome reception.  Then in Detective Comics#526 Batman celebrates his 500th appearance in the book by not only teaming up with Catwoman and another of his supposed lady loves but also by facing down his most dastardly (and some not so dastardly) foes.  Also Jason Todd’s life changes forever.  I wrap things up by listing off the other books Batman appeared in that month and reading a whole bunch of e-mails.

EPISODE 2: APRIL 1983

Episode 2: April 1983

Welcome back to the show, everyone!  This posting may be a day late but the show was on time so I should get an A for effort and a D for getting the website updated on time.

That averages out to what…a B-…maybe a C+?  I don’t know.

Anyway after talking about a really good deal I got on Batman back issues at DragonCon 2011 I dive right into to the Bat-books with an April 1983 cover date, both of which have guest artists.  In Batman #358 we are treated to a Curt Swan drawn tale of the Dark Knight as Batman steps up his investigation to find Killer Croc while Croc vies for control of Gotham’s underworld and at the end the two square off for the first time.  Then, in Detective Comics #525 we are treated to some early Dan Jurgens art as Batman searches for proof that Croc is alive and also makes one of the worst mistakes one can make while on a date with Vicki Vale.  This is followed by Killer Croc vs. Batman, Round Two.  The episode wraps up with where else Batman appeared this cover month in the newly (and some will probably say poorly) named Same Bat-Month, Different Bat-Appearance segment followed by three of your e-mails.

During the e-mail segment I read feedback from three of the people that I had sent “preview copies” of the first episode to under the delusion that I was going to be several episodes ahead before I released the first one.  That…didn’t happen but I still got some nice e-mails from my friends in the podcasting community including Andrew Leyland (who co-hosts Hey Kids, Comics! with his son Micheal), Michael Kaiser (who used to co-host Legends of the Batman and The Mighty Shield: A Captain America podcast) and Scott Gardner (who co-hosts Two True Freaks and Tales of the JSA).  I am also on the Comics Monthly Monday episodes of TTF and co-host Tales with Scott, just to throw that out there.

EPISODE 1: MARCH 1983

Episode 1: March 1983

Here it is, folks!  The very first episode of Bailey’s Batman Podcast.  In this exciting first episode I talk about how I became such a Batman fan, my experiences with the character and how this show is going to work.  After that I get into the meat of the matter by covering the two main Batman books with the cover date of March 1983.  In Batman #357 the Squid returns and we see the first appearances of Killer Croc and Jason Todd.  The action continues (literally) in Detective Comics #524 as the battle with the Squid comes to a shocking conclusion.

Next time: We roll into the April 1983 books as Batman and Killer Croc square off for the very first time.
