COLLECTED EDITIONS – SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL VOL. 3

(Collected Editions is a listing of the various trade paperbacks, hardcovers, omnibuses, etc. that are in my Superman collection.  The goal is to not only inventory my collection of trades, hardcovers, etc. but also to display said collection and produce something resembling a resource for other Superman readers, collectors and fans.)

Notes

  • Jerry Ordway’s introduction details how he broke into the industry and discusses the stories reprinted in this volume.
  • The reading order of this volume is kind of strange but again I am used to reading them in chronological/cover date order.
  • This volume shows how diverse Byrne’s and Wolfman’s Superman stories were.  While Byrne deals with Vietnam in the Bloodsport story it’s Wolfman that gives us a more down to Earth Superman.  His stories ask some hard questions that don’t necessarily get hard answers, which I like quite a bit.
  • On the other hand The Circle storyline kicks into full gear in this volume and I was not a fan of those characters.  Mainly because they didn’t go anywhere.
  • Bibbo makes his first appearance in Adventures of Superman #428.  He’s my fav’rit.
  • The Cat Grant driven story was the highlight of this volume.  Wolfman gave her quite a bit of depth right away and the introduction of Adam, her son, only added to her as a character.
  • Mummy Rocket Boots.  Three words that have become a staple of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast.
  • Part of me wishes they would have included Hawkman #10 as that story leads into Action Comics #588.
  • The cover gallery is a bit smaller than in the last volume.  This is a bit disappointing as I liked the full page covers from last time.
