Episode 9: Batman #309 and Brave and the Bold #148

Welcome to the ninth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight.  The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.  They mostly stick to the later part of the Bronze Age but just about any era of Batman is fair game for their discussions.

This time out it’s Christmas in September as the guys tackle two holiday themed issues.  In Batman #309 we get the answer to the age old question; what would it have been like if the Adam West Batman had met the Lou Ferrigno Hulk.  Actually this is a rather sensitive story that deals with depression, mental illness and suicide against the backdrop of Christmas.  Blockbuster is the antagonist but Andy and Mike wouldn’t necessarily call him the villain.  Then in Brave and the Bold #148 the Dark Knight teams up with Plastic Man in a story that makes very little sense but is so much fun that you really don’t notice.  It’s Batman and Plastic man dealing with the mob on Christmas Eve and spans the entire East Coast before it’s over with.

Also the word “butt-legger” comes up a lot.

Be sure to head on over to the main Overlooked Dark Knight site for a gallery of images from the issues discussed during this episode!

  1. Hi Michael , just heard you on the Retro Blasting / Dreamland pod on Batman Bill and then the bit where you mention “I have a podcast” – had to race to the computer and look up your stuff right away. I’m a huge Batman fan and really enjoyed your take/comments on the documentary. I finally watched it recently, and I’m glad that it was acknowledged how long it took to be completed. I remember thinking several times it must have been cancelled / uncompleted, and messaged Marc Tyler Nobleman a few times on social media while he was making the project to ask it was still happening, and each time he said yes, it definitely was.
I look forward to listening to your podcasts, and thanks for being on the Dreamland/Retro Blasting pod, which is one of my fav shows. I’ve also been listening to everything Kevin Smith since he started – so I’ve listened to all of those Batman related interviews multiple times. Favourites being Grant Morrison, Marc Tyler Nobleman, Neal Adams, Denny ‘O Neil and of course Mark Hamill. I pretty much blame Kevin for my blogging habit, which is mostly about Batman.

  2. Jonathan,

Thank you so much for commenting. I do appreciate it. Being on the Dreamland podcast was a huge honor for me because I love the show and everything Michael and Melinda do through Retroblasting. I’m glad you were able to find this Network through that.

Don’t be shy with the commentary either. Chime in through the comment section here when the mood strikes you.

Again, thanks so much for commenting. Feedback means a lot.
