SUPERMAN SOLICITATIONS – MAY 2013 EDITION

I’m going to give this whole “talking about the solicitations soon after they hit the Internet thing” a try.  If it works out great, if not it was worth the post.  Normally I don’t talk about current events (Man of Steel posts notwithstanding) but maybe that should change.

So here we go.

Main Titles

Superman battles an enemy of his own making in the horrible Hybrid—but what else does Lex Luthor have in store for The Man of Steel and the people of Metropolis? Get set to learn some of the secrets behind Luthor’s role in The New 52!

My Two Cents

I am looking forward to Andy Diggle and Tony Daniel’s run on this book a great deal.  I am largely unfamiliar with Diggle’s writing but from what I have seen in the interviews he’s given he seems to have a good take on the character.  It’s nice to see that someone is actually going to do something with Lex in the New 52 as that character has been doing a whole lot of nothing and even though the whole Hannibal Lecter riff was cool I am still impatient for Lex to become Superman preeminent villain again.

Hector Hammond is looking for Superman to save him from the New God known as Orion in “Metropolis Burning!”

My Two Cents

I loved this cover the moment I saw it.  I have not been the biggest fan of Kenneth Rocafort’s art on this book, so a break from that will be nice.  Oddly enough I have a genuine sense of excitement in seeing Superman and the New Gods interact for the first time in the New 52, at least in the non-Earth-2 world.  To my mind the New Gods are Superman spin-off characters and I like to see them “mix it up” as it were.

“BLOOD AND STEEL” begins as The Teen of Steel decides it’s time to become more proactive in his battle against evil. But how far will he go before he crossed the line?

My Two Cents

Superboy has consistently been my least favorite title in the New 52.  This new version of the character has done little but mope and fight and mope and fight and steal and mope and fight.  He just hasn’t grabbed me.  We are getting the second new writer after Lobdell and I am not sure if that is a good thing or not.  The copy here suggests that we’re going to see a “darker” Superboy, which could just be solicitation hype or it could be the direction the book is taking.  Despite my apathy towards this comic I am trying to be open minded as the new writer takes over.  We’ll see how that works out.

Supergirl is dead—Long live Supergirl! Or so it seems as the strange connection between the Karas has Power Girl becoming Supergirl again.

My Two Cents

I really hope that ends up as the final cover because it is freaking gorgeous.  World’s Finest has been one of my favorite books recently and I love the idea of Power Girl and Supergirl finally meeting.  I am dealing with a certain level of disappointment because my opinion of  Supergirl has been the opposite of my opinion of Superboy.  Sure it can be slow as far as the pacing goes but man has it been a satisfying read.  A new writer makes me nervous but given the plot described in the solicitation I am very optimistic about the next stage of this book’s evolution.

The PROLOGUE TO TRINITY WAR continues as a revelation about Batman could destroy Wonder Woman and Superman’s relationship! Plus, in the backup story, the penultimate chapter of the tale of Shazam finds Billy Batson learning the shocking secret of Black Adam!

My Two Cents

Despero!  That’s awesome.  Prologue to Trinity War!  That’s…well, I don’t know how I feel about that yet.  I am not a big fan of the whole super hero fighting super hero thing because it has been played out over the last few years.  Still, this book has really stepped up to the plate and been the Justice League title I wanted from Geoff Johns.

As Power Girl returns to her classic look, DeSaad wreaks havoc on her tech empire—and PG and Huntress find themselves hunted by the talented torturer from Apokolips.

My Two Cents

Since this is my first time doing this whole solicitation round up thing I guess I should explain that considering this new version of Power Girl is back to being the cousin of a Superman I consider this book to be a Superman Family title.  It straddles the line between my Superman and Batman books but since Superman is my favorite I file it with those books.  I am not sure how I feel about Kara going back to her original look as I rather liked the costume she’s been running around in but I’ll see how it fits into the story.  More New Gods stuff this time out which makes me happy.

Don’t miss the debut of this all-new, digital-first series starring The Man of Tomorrow, written and illustrated by some of comics’ finest talents! Journey into Superman’s past in a tale written by acclaimed Ender’s Game author Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston, with art by TOM STRONG’s Chris Sprouse and Karl Story! Plus, witness Superman’s first encounter with the work of Lex Luthor, brought to you by Jeff Parker (Hulk) and Chris Samnee (Daredevil)!

My Two Cents

The excitement I have felt about this title has been marred by the controversy Orson Scott Card’s involvement has garnered.  In all honesty the only reason I am buying this book is because I don’t want to punish Jeff Parker and Chris Samnee (or Chris Sprouse and Karl Story for that matter) just because they had the luck of the draw to be in the same issue as Card’s story.  Other than that I am very excited that this title is coming out as a print edition.

Detective John Jones, the Martian Manhunter, steps into the Smallville spotlight in “Effigy,” a stand-alone adventure! A grisly murder in Gotham City sends Martian Manhunter on a quest to confront his past. Guest-starring Batman and Nightwing!

My Two Cents

While Superman seems to be absent from this special (to answer your question, I don’t read the digital versions of these books as I don’t own a tablet yet) the fact that Axel Gimenez is doing the art makes this book a must read.  I love Axel’s art and cannot recommend him enough.

Based on the upcoming DC fighting game from NetherRealm Studios, creators of Mortal Kombat! Batman has two allies: Damian and Dick Grayson. One is with him, while the other has joined Superman’s cause. The conflict between The Dark Knight and The Man of Steel is about to turn very personal. Plus: The Flash travels to Australia and ponders his own allegiances.

My Two Cents

The first issue of this book blew me away.  I am on board.  While some people seem to have an issue with the way Superman is acting I am fine with it because this is outside of the main continuity.  Besides, it’s a video game tie-in and thus far is so much better than such a thing has a right to be.

My Two Cents

Oh.  Hell.  Yes.  I am so glad this book was re-solicited.  Originally it didn’t seem like the All-Star Squadron issues were going to be included but now they are and I am a very happy man.  I still need to get Volume 5 of this book.  I will probably order both when this book hits in June.

My Two Cents

During the February 11th 2013 installment of RADIO K.A.L. I made the comment that my wife might get a little bent out of shape if I wanted to get this statue.  After I showed it to her she thought it was cute.  Despite this I won’t be plunking down the $125 to get it.  Still, the more I look at the design the more I like it.

My Two Cents

Not a whole lot to say about this really.  I mean it’s a place holder solicit with place holder artwork.  I’m not much for statues but I am curious as to how this one is going to turn out.

Final Thoughts

May looks like it is going to be a really interesting month for the Superman titles.  It is also the first month in a long time where I am excited across the board for what’s going to be released, even Superboy in a weird way.  It took awhile but I am really starting to warm up to the New 52.  It may not be “my” DC but things are starting to gel.  I am well aware that that could change at any moment but for now I am cautiously optimistic and hopeful.

I really hope that I don’t end up disappointed.

1 thought on “SUPERMAN SOLICITATIONS – MAY 2013 EDITION”

  1. FAMILY ADVENTURES has been a big hit, especially as one that my 5-year-old daughter and I can read together. I am *very* disappointed it will not be continuing.

SUPERGIRL has been a pleasant surprise. I was very nervous with all the talk of angst and attitude when New 52 launched, but she’s a great character and very engaging, with some pretty exciting adventures so far. I wish they’d lower the cut of her uniform a bit, but that’s my only complaint (she’s a teen, come on!).
