This time out Mike and Jeff close the book on cover year 1993 and that year ends with…well, it’s not quite a bang and it’s not quite a whimper. In all honesty the two books that finish out the December 1993 cover date are quite good in places but two things kind of sully things a bit. You see, the early ‘90s have come to the Superman titles in a storyline called Spilled Blood. Part 1 takes place in Adventures of Superman #507 which not only sees the first appearance of a new, more racist Bloodsport but also the first appearance of Barry Kitson and Ray McCarthy as the artists on this title. The blood continues to flow (horrible pun, we know) in Action Comics #694 where another old enemy rears her ugly head and Vinnie Edge gives a fantastic demonstration on how not to pick up women. Finally there is Elsewhere in the DCU!

And once again…we’re back.

This time things start off elsewhere…not elsewhere in the DC Universe (that comes next episode) but in another reality. That’s right, dear listeners, the boys are covering their first Elseworlds story. What if baby Kal-El was found not by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas but by Thomas and Martha Wayne in Gotham City? That very scenario is explored in Superman: Speeding Bullets. Then things move back to the “real world” as the boys begin their coverage of the December 1993 cover dated books with Superman: The Man of Steel #28, where Superman throws himself into his work and fights what is quite possibly the most ‘90s super villain team ever. After that things get kind of sad. In Superman #84 Adam Grant is kidnapped by the Toyman and something really tragic happens. Finally, Mike and Jeff hop into the cab and head downtown for a segment they like to call Meanwhile At The Daily Planet!

Last time the boys spent a good hour and a half discussing the series in general. This time out they dive right into the pilot and then go over the first regular episode Strange Visitor. And now for something completely different.

Well…not different per se. Mike and Jeff are still talking about Superman this time out but instead of the Post Crisis comic books they are focusing on the television adventures of the Man of Steel. Right around the time Superman was fully back from the dead ABC began airing Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and since that was such a big thing during this era the boys want to talk about it. Instead of taking up time after the comic book talk to do that Mike decided that these should be their own episodes and that pretty much explains what is going on this time out.

When the boys sat down to record this episode the original intent was to do a little overall Lois and Clark talk and then dive into the pilot and the first episode. Well…Mike and Jeff got to talking and suddenly the overall Lois and Clark talk took a full hour and a half, so Mike decided (he sure is bossy) that he would split the episode in two and have all of the overall talk happen in one episode and then the specific episode talk happen in the next. Mike would like to believe that this was for the sake of the audience, but frankly it was also to save his sanity as sitting in front of the computer editing a three hour episode is not the fun it used to be. All of that is a fancy way of saying this time out the boys discuss Lois and Clark in general and a fun discussion it was.

One hundred and fifty episodes.

From Crisis to Crisis has made it to the one hundred and fiftieth episode mark.

And Mike has yet to kill Jeff.

It truly is a miracle.

Anyway, the boys are back with their 150th episode. Most shows would make a big deal out of this. Mike and Jeff are going to buck that trend. They are doing their best to get back on track. So this time out they close the books on the Superman titles with a November 1993 cover date. In Adventures of Superman #506 Cadmus comes after Superboy and Superman gets involved. The boys like to call this a back door pilot because…well, it’s a back door pilot. Then in Action Comics #693 we find out the final fate of the Eradicator and boy is it weird. This is also a back door pilot of sorts but in an equally weird way. Finally Mike leads you through Elsewhere in the DCU.

Quick note for those seeing this soon after it hits the Internet; as next week is Christmas (hello, future people) there will be no episode.

The boys are back!

That’s right, faithful listeners, after an extended and not quite planned break Mike and Jeff have returned with new episodes of From Crisis to Crisis! Sorry we’ve been away so long…it won’t happen again.

Unless there is a family emergency or something. Or one of them gets sick. You just can’t plan for stuff like that.

Anyway, it is time to get back to basics. Superman has returned but there is a little bit of house cleaning to do and the November 1993 cover dated books are where that began. In Superman: The Man of Steel #27 Bloodthirst makes his move and Lois gets a haircut! Seriously. That’s a big part of the issue as is Lex Luthor starting to go back to his old EVIL ways. Then in Superman #83 Superman and a host of heroes head on out to Coast City to take care of the Engine City problem. Some of the heroes, including Green Lantern, want to dump it into the ocean. Other heroes, like Aquaman, think that’s a bad idea. Which side wins? Listen and find out. Finally the boys hop into a cab, pay their $6.50 and head to the segment they like to call Meanwhile, at the Daily Planet.

In all seriousness we are sorry that there has been so much of a delay. It is mostly Mike’s fault as he wanted to get a few of these in the can before he began releasing them so that the show can get back to a weekly schedule. Hopefully this issue is resolved and normal service will resume. Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

The commentary begins just as the episode does and the boys manage to sound coherent through the whole thing. They cover the movie from top to bottom with some final thoughts right at the end.

Oh, and see if you can spot the moment where Jeff accidentally muted himself for a few minutes. It was…interesting.

In this special Death and Return of Superman edition Mike and Jeff read through the entirety (at the time anyway) of the e-mails they have received since the last mailbag episode. Many of the e-mails details how some of the listeners discovered Superman, the Death and Return saga or both in some cases. Others lead to long and rambling conversations between the boys. Reign of the Supermen…is over.

Yes, faithful listener, the time has come to wrap up the Death and Return of Superman talk here on From Crisis to Crisis. It’s been a crazy nine months but the end is here and this episode serves as an epilogue to the saga as a whole. To add to the weirdness the boys are…well, they aren’t alone because there are two of them but they don’t have a special guest on this time out. So it is up to the two of them to cover Adventures of Superman #505 (where Clark and Lois are reunited and a new villain makes his first appearance) and Action Comics #692 (where Clark Kent returns and we learn exactly why Superman was able to come back from the dead). The boys end the show by talking about what other DC books were on the stands when these issues came out in a segment they like to call Elsewhere in the DC Universe.

And that is it for this episode and for the Death and Return of Superman. Stay tuned, though, because Mike and Jeff are just getting started with this era of Superman! There is so much to look forward to in the weeks and months to come like Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey and the Fall of/Battle For Metropolis and Worlds Collide and Zero Hour and much, much more!

Episode 145: Reign of the Supermen Part 11

REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN CONCLUDES!

You read that right, faithful FCTC listener…CONCLUDES!

This time out Mike and Jeff finish up their coverage of Reign of the Supermen proper even though there are a few more episodes covering the Death and Return of Superman story as a whole. As with the previous installments covering this storyline the boys have invited a guest along. Lee Busby (co-host of PAD Smash: An Incredible Hulk Podcast) comes by the palatial FCTC recording studio and helps Mike and Jeff cover the final two ROTS chapters, including most of Green Lantern #46. This issue features Hal’s return to Earth and his vicious battle with Mongul. Unfortunately the final few pages of this issue TOTALLY gives away the ending of the next book the boys cover, which is Superman #82. This is the big one, folks as Team Superman battles the Cyborg ending with the one, true Man of Steel throwing down with the supposed Man of Tomorrow. Finally everyone hops in a cab, pays their $6.50 and heads down to the segment the boys like to call Meanwhile, at the Daily Planet Building!
