The Thrilling Adventures of Superman

Welcome to episode 39 of The Thrilling Adventures of Superman. The show’s mission is to explore the history and development of the Superman in his formative years by chronicling the Man of Steel’s Golden Age adventures in comics, radio and film.

It’s an episode that’s been a long time coming, folks. This episode, Michael is joined by Charlie Niemeyer of Superman in the Bronze Age for a look at the first six episodes of the Superman radio show! We begin with the destruction of Krypton and follow Superman all the way through his first adventure on Earth! It’s a great set of episodes and a great conversation worthy of Superman’s first steps off of the printed page. Plus: This episode, Michael makes a big announcement concerning the future of the podcast!

Superman #132 & Action Comics #257!

SUPERMAN 132, October 1959, was published around August 6, 1959. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of 10¢. Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye.

This issue contained a rarity in the silver age, an issue length story. SUPERMAN’S OTHER LIFE (25 pgs.) was written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. This story has been reprinted in THE GREATEST SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD, SUPERMAN: THE GREATEST STORIES EVER TOLD vol. II and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. I.

- Part I: KRYPTON LIVES ON!
- Part II: FUTURO: SUPER HERO OF KRYPTON!
- Part III: SUPERMAN OF TWO WORLDS!

ACTION COMICS 257, October 1959, was published around August 27, 1959, the very day my parents got married. The issue contained 32 pages for the cover price of a dime. Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye.

THE REPORTER OF STEEL (12 pgs.) was written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. This story was reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: sUPERMAN vol. I.

Congo Bill starred in the second story of the issue, THE MAN APE SKIN DIVER (6 pgs.), written by Robert Bernstein and drawn by Howard Sherman. This was Congo Bill’s 9th appearance as Congorilla.

The 6th Supergirl solo story was titled THE THREE MAGIC WISHES, written by Otto Binder and drawn by Jim Mooney. It was reprinted in SUPERGIRL ARCHIVES vol. I and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERGIRL vol. I.

Elsewhere in DC Comics, 32 titles carried the October or October/November 1959 cover dated.

50 years ago, 5 Superman titles were published in September 1961, the month of my 1st birthday, and carried the November 1961 cover date. They all contained 32 pages for the cover price of 10¢.

WORLD’S FINEST COMICS #121, SUPERMAN #149, SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE #29, ACTION COMICS #282 & ADVENTURE COMICS #290.

Picking up from episode 32, we continue with part two of our Europe at war trilogy as Michael looks at the 11th storyline from the Superman daily newspaper strip! This installment finds Clark Kent framed for murder and forced into joining spies in their diabolical acts of terrorism. Its up to Superman to lend a hand and thwart their plans and prevent the U.S. from being plunged into war! Also this episode, Michael gives a Spotlight on Golden Age artist Dennis Neville!

Superman Forever Radio Episode 41- The SFnR

Change is in store for Superman Forever Radio, as the DC Reboot inspires David to take the show in an all new, fresh direction.

It’s a major announcement that will change the show’s second season, and the way Superman is covered.

Amalak, the alien with a mad on for Kryptonians must contend with Superman, Power Girl, Supergirl, Krypto, and Christopher Kent in Superman #670, which concludes the “Third Kryptonian” storyline.

The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel face down Darkseid in the conclusion of the “Torment” storyline in Superman/Batman # 42, before going toe to toe with Dr. Light in issue #42.

And, we conclude the first season of Superman: The Animated Series with the 13th episode- “Two’s a crowd” where we learn the importance of a big screen TV.

And Darkseid returns to the show to make amends, and to make his own important announcement.
