026 Golden Age Superman — May 1940

Episode 026 — May 1940

Welcome to Golden Age Superman.  This episode, I spend a little while taking a look at Superman 5, New York World’s Fair Comics 1940, Action Comics 26, and all the usual monthly doses of Superman in other media.  Highlights include Alex Evell’s campaign against the Planet (get it?  evell = evil), Jack Burnley’s first work on Superman at the New York World’s Fair, and Professor Cobalt’s quack clinic taking advantage of FDR’s drive to cure polio. All that and more make this the BIGGEST EPISODE EVER! of the show.  We also see the debut of two new powers — photographic memory, and super facial muscular control!  You won’t wanna miss it!

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 109: SEPTEMBER 1992 PART 1

Episode 109: September 1992 Part 1

Welcome to the one hundred and ninth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

THE BLAZE/SATANUS WAR ENDS!

And the conclusion to that story was so epic Jeff and Mike invited a friend over to talk about it. Jon Wilson (he of Golden Age Superman and other awesome podcasts fame) stops by the spacious From Crisis to Crisis Studios to discuss Superman: The Man of Steel #15 and Superman #71, which are not only the first two Superman books with a September 1992 cover date but also contain the final two chapters of the previously mentioned Blaze/Satanus War. This is followed by the Meanwhile…At the Daily Planet segment and then the episode pretty much ends. Mike and Jeff would like to thank Jon for stopping by and remember you can find Jon’s Golden Age Superman podcast right here at the Superman Podcast Network.

You can subscribe to the show in two ways. First there is the RSS Feed and there is also the iTunes link.

Next time: Superman finds a little Kismet, Rampage returns and Guy Gardner is back in the Justice League.

The Thrilling Adventures of Superman, Episode 35

The Thrilling Adventures of Superman

Welcome to episode 35 of The Thrilling Adventures of Superman. The show’s mission is to explore the history and development of the Superman in his formative years by chronicling the Man of Steel’s Golden Age adventures in comics, radio and film.

Everything you know will change in a flash… and someone’s getting punched in the face! It is no secret the comics industry is facing changes on a number of fronts. They breed debate, talk and many cross words. But at the end of the day, the number one thing they breed is a whole of insane behavior from normally level-headed folks. This episode, in our third Fifth Week installment, Michael wades into the den of changes and reminds that we are all in this together.

And don’t forget: For the month of September, the show is bi-weekly! Check back on Tuesdays and Fridays for more Superman awesomeness for your ears!

Episode #196: Superman Comic Book Cover Dated September 1959!

Action Comics #256!

ACTION COMICS 256 (which I misidentified in the introduction as issue 258), September 1959, was published around July 30, 1959. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of a dime. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye, the art team for the Superman story in this issue.

THE SUPERMAN OF THE FUTURE was written by Otto Binder. this 12 page story was reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. I

Congo Bill starred in the second story of the issue, JANU, THE JOKER OF THE JUNGLE. This 7 page story was drawn by Howard Sherman, and was Congorilla’s 8th appearance.

Supergirl’s 5th solo story was THE GREAT SUPERGIRL MIRAGE. Writer Otto Binder and artist Jim Mooney created this 7 page story. Host Daniel Reed has posted his first episode of SUPERGIRL’S COSMIC ADVENTURES, at http://supergirlpodcast.blogspot.com. I have listened to it, and highly reccomend it to any comic book fan.

Elsewhere in DC Comics, 32 titles carried the September or September/October 1959 cover date.

Next Episode: SUPERMAN FAMILY COMIC BOOK COVER DATED AUGUST 1956: SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN #14.

In 2 Weeks: SUPERMAN COMIC BOOKS COVER DATED OCTOBER 1959: SUPERMAN 132 & ACTION COMICS 257!

Also, if you know the original publication information for a Superman story involving his alien zoo at his Fortress of Solitude, reprinted in the 1970 SUPERMAN BUMPER BOOK, a UK Superman hardcover anthology, post it in comments or through the contact information below.

Episode 108: August 1992 Part 2

Welcome to the one hundred and eighth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! SUPERMAN GOES TO BLAZES THIS WEEK!

Well, Superman goes to the Newstime Building, which has been overrun by demons sent by Blaze, so the above statement is somewhat accurate.

Anyway, Mike and Jeff are back this week to finish out the Superman books with an August 1992 cover date. The Blaze/Satanus War begins in Adventures of Superman #493 as Sam Foswell starts his new job at Newstime and all H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks breaks loose forcing Lord Satanus to make his first Post-Crisis appearance. The war continues in Action Comics #680 where things heat up (pun intended) and Sam Foswell is drawn deeper into Blaze’s plan. Then in Justice League America #65 (which has nothing to do with the Blaze/Satanus War) the Leaguers have their final showdown with Starbreaker. Finally there are the ads and Elsewhere in the DCU.

Oh, and Mike’s dog makes a special appearance late in the episode. That is the snoring you here.

You can subscribe to the show in two ways. First there is the RSS Feed and there is also the iTunes link.

Next Time: The Blaze/Satanus War concludes!

The Thrilling Adventures of Superman, Episode 33

The Thrilling Adventures of Superman

Welcome to episode 33 of The Thrilling Adventures of Superman. The show’s mission is to explore the history and development of the Superman in his formative years by chronicling the Man of Steel’s Golden Age adventures in comics, radio and film.

This episode it’s back to the spinner rack as Michael looks at the Superman story from ACTION COMICS #22, which finds Clark Kent and Lois Lane thrust into a war between neighboring European countries. But after strange happenings both on land and sea, it becomes apparent that there is something more sinister behind it all, meaning that this… is a job for Superman!

Superman Fan Podcast Episode #195: Superman Family Comic Book Cover Dated July/August 1956: World’s Finest Comics #83!

Episode #195: Superman Family Comic Book Cover Dated July/August 1956!

World's Finest Comics #83!

WORLD’S FINEST COMICS #83, July/August 1956, was published around May 31, 1956. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of a dime. The editor was Jack Schiff, and the cover was pencilled by Dick Sprang and inked by Stan Kaye. At the top of the cover was a banner advertising a contest with 5,000 prizes. This contest will be discussed later in the episode.

The 12 page Superman and Batman story was titled THE CASE OF THE MOTHER GOOSE MYSTERY. it was written by Bill Finger, pencilled by Dick Sprang and inked by Stan Kaye. It was reprinted in WORLD’S FINEST COMICS ARCHIVES vol. I and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: WORLD’S FINEST ARCHIVES vol. I. Both reprint editions credit Curt Swan as the penciller of the cover, but THE GRAND COMIC BOOK DATABASE at http://comics.org noted that the credit was incorrect, and penciller Dick Sprang confirmed pencilling this particular cover.

Green Arrow starred in the 6 page second story of the issue, THE ERROR CAR, drawn by George Papp.

After this story DC published a full page house ad for a slogan contest for their comic books. Contest forms would be published in the DC titles with a September 1956 cover date. Among the 5,000 prizes available to be won were: a Columbia bike, skates, games and dolls. This contest will be covered in future episodes of this podcast.

The final 6 page story of the issue starred Tomahawk in THE TRIBE WITHOUT A CHIEF, drawn by Bob Brown.

Elsewhere in DC Comics, 30 titles carried the July or July/August 1956 cover date.
