The Thrilling Adventures of Superman, Episode 56

The Thrilling Adventures of SupermanWelcome to episode 56 of The Thrilling Adventures of Superman. The show’s mission is to explore the history and development of the Superman in his formative years by chronicling the Man of Steel’s Golden Age adventures in comics, radio and film.

Charlie Niemeyer is back as he and Michael look at the seventh storyline from the Superman radio serial. Clark Kent is enlisted to aid in solving the mystery of some airplane disasters — and when Jimmy Olsen tags along, both our favorite cub reporter and the Man of Steel get much more than they bargained for! It’s a fun (if not somewhat maddening) six-episode tale as Superman deals with feral gorillas, rock slides, confused writers and more!

Be sure to check out J. David Weter’s solo show, PADsmash: An Incredible Hulk Podcast, and catch him regularly on Green Lantern’s Light with this podcast’s host and Jeffrey Taylor, Superman in the Bronze Age with Charlie Niemeyer and The New 52 Adventures of Superman with Jon Wilson and Michael Kaiser. A huge thanks once more to Mr. Weter for coming on the show.

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 125: FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND PART 2

Episode 125: Funeral For a Friend Part 2

Welcome to the one hundred and twenty-fifth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

This week Mike (who is getting over a cold, which is why he sounds funky) and Jeff continue their coverage of the Death and Return of Superman with the third and fourth chapters of Funeral For a Friend. In Superman: The Man of Steel #20 the supporting cast, the heroes of the DC Universe and even Bill Clinton gather in Metropolis for Superman’s funeral as the Kents have their own private service in Smallville. Then in Superman #76 a group of heroes gather to continue Superman’s tradition of answering his mail on Christmas Eve. Plus Mitchell Anderson visits Metropolis and Lois, Jonathan, Martha and Lana Lang get together to have a very important discussion. Mixed in is the usual coverage of the two novelizations and the BBC audio drama. Plus, Mike complains some more about the Death and Return of Superman Omnibus. Finally Jeffrey tells you what was going on in the real world during the Meanwhile, at the Daily Planet segment.

You can subscribe to the show in two ways. First there is the RSS Feed and there is also the iTunes link.

If you want to comment on the show or contact the hosts you can always private message Mike and Jeff, at the Superman Homepage, leave comments here or at the Homepage or here or email them by clicking this link.  All questions, concerns, fears, trepidations and cheap shots are welcome.

Also, be sure to check out Mike’s blog, the Fortress of Baileytude, for all kinds of neat Death and Return of Superman related scans, videos and more!

Next time: Funeral For a Friend continues with Adventures of Superman #499 and Action Comics #686.

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 124: FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND PART 1

Episode 124: Funeral For a Friend Part 1

Welcome to the one hundred and twenty-fourth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This show has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

The battle is over. The mourning begins.

This week Mike and Jeff kick off their coverage of Funeral For a Friend, the second part of the Death and Return of Superman trilogy. They start things off by playing catch-up with the Superman: Doomsday & Beyond young adult novel written by Louise Simonson and with some general Death of Superman talk. Then they dig into the comics starting with Justice League America #70, which features the League’s reaction to Superman’s death and a few “Blue Beetle is dead,” jokes. Then they move into the story proper with Adventures of Superman #498 where we see the paramedics, assisted by the Guardian, Professor Hamilton and even Bibbo, try and ultimately fail to revive Superman. This is followed by Action Comics #685 the world reacts to the death of Superman. Finally Mike and Jeff play catch-up again, this time with the Meanwhile at the Daily Planet and Elsewhere in the DCU segments.

New 52 Adventures 02 — Superboy Supergirl Superman 1

Episode 02 download here

After the tremendous response you gave to episode 1, how could we not return for more?

In this second episode of The New 52 Adventures of Superman, we turn our attention to the rest of the Superman stable of books: Superboy 1, Supergirl 1, and Superman 1.  The Superman universe in this New 52 universe is unfolding before our eyes, so it is of course our job to dissect and talk about what we like, what we love, and every now and again what we wish were different.

We do hope you enjoy the show, “we” being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman, J. David Weter of PADSmash!: An Incredible Hulk Podcast and Green Lantern’s Light, as well as Michael Kaiser, coming out of retirement after having been involved with a couple different shows in months gone.  If you have thoughts on the books we cover or on our comments regarding them, please share them by writing an email or comment below.

Next episode due February 1

029 Golden Age Superman — August 1940

Episode 029 — August 1940

I am joined again this episode by Charlie Niemeyer of Superman in the Bronze Age to look at Jack Burnley’s work in Action Comics 29.  It’s a great little mystery that jams 13 pages more full of story than they often are.  Feel free to laugh and mock as Jon stumbles all over the various characters’ names, as the guest patiently waits for him to figure out what’s going on.  Then over in the newspapers, Lois gets kidnapped (like that’s news) and Superman goes for a nap on top of a train, while on the radio show, Clark assists in the plunder of an ancient civilization.  All that and more on Golden Age Superman!

If you wish to send feedback, you may do so in the comments below or via email.  You can also subscribe to the show through iTunes, and leave a review if you like to spread the word to others. And don’t forget to like the show’s Facebook page.   Thank you so much for listening!

Superman in the Bronze Age Episode 40 — April 1973

Wow!  40 episodes.  And what do David and Charlie do to celebrate?  Absolutely nothing, because 40 is not a “cool” anniversary.  Instead, the guys review 1 good story and 3 not-so-good stories.  In this episode, Superman takes on a director(?), Clark has an unhappy birthday on a day that isn’t really his birthday, we learn Lex Luthor’s fatal weakness, and Christopher Chance faces his father’s killer.  Plus, we have a few tangents, we make fun of ads, we find out what else was happening in the DC Multiverse this month and we announce next episodes special guest-star!

If you would be interested in guest co-hosting an episode of Superman in the Bronze Age, please send an email to superbronze1970@gmail.com, and we’ll discuss an episode for you to guest on.
