FCTC EPISODE 175: WORLDS COLLIDE PART 1

FCTC 2013 LogoFCTC_Ep_175_Large

Episode 175: Worlds Collide Part 1

Welcome to the one hundred and seventy-fifth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index.  Part commentary.  Part history lesson.  All podcast.

One Man.  Two Worlds.  And The End Of All There Is…

This time out Mike and Jeff begin their look at a story that Mike was really looking forward to and Jeff was…not really looking forward to.  Worlds Collide was a 14 part series that crossed over between three of the Superman related books and four of the books put out by Milestone Comics with one special right there in the middle.  We have been seeing a mail carrier named Fred Bentson in some of the Superman books during the Battle For Metropolis.  Fred finally takes center stage during this story and proves to be a threat of universal proportions.  Mike kicks things off with a short history of Milestone Comics and a rundown of who the players from that universe are.  Then the boys jump into the first part, which takes place in Superman: The Man of Steel #35.  Not only do we see the beginnings of the story but also the death of a supporting character.

While they don’t get the full synopsis/review treatment the boys do go over the next five chapters of the story.  The second part takes place in Hardware #17, where we meet (if you haven’t read his title before that is) Hardware and see how Fred’s powers are growing.  Then in Superboy #6 the Kid fights the Parasite and gets drawn into the story.  The teenage heroes team-up (sort of) in Icon #15 as Rocket (of Icon and Rocket fame) gets in on the action.  Steel and Hardware meets for reals in Steel #6 while Superman is mistaken for a fictional character in the pages of Blood Syndicate #16.  The danger kicks into high gear and the full synopsis treatment returns in the pages of Worlds #1 where Fred’s powers reach their zenith and he becomes the entity known as Rift!

SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN 45, April 7, 2014, was published on April 7, 1960. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of  10¢. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye, It featured the issues first story (and reminded me of the cover to SUPERMAN 123, August 1958, which featured the very first Supergirl story. That story was covered back in Episode 123 for the week of Wednesday, March 2, 2011). All three stories have been reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. IV. The art team for all three stories was penciller Curt Swan and inker John Forte.

MOSAIC Episode 3 – Powers Part 1 – Super Hearing and X-Ray Vision

coverblackThis is the first of a three part series where we cover those abilities, traits, and powers that set Superman part in the Man of Steel. In this episode, we cover:

  1. Natural Born Kryptonian
  2. Kryptonian Codex
  3. Respiratory Adaptation.
  4. Genetic Memory
  5. Super Hearing
  6. X-Ray Vision

While covering our topics, we will discuss and answer the following questions:

  • What kind of baggage did Jor-El have preventing him from coming to Earth?
  • How could Jax-Ur discover the Codex was bonded to Kal-El from a blood sample but be unable to recover the Codex from the sample?
  • How could the Codex be bonded to Kal-El? Why did the film show us blood cells? How could that work?
  • Is there evidence Superman can use his powers without breathing?
  • As a child, who was Clark imitating by wearing a cape?
  • If Superman has super hearing, how does he get surprised?
  • What is the maximum range of super hearing? What does auditory omniscience mean?
  • Can Superman use his X-Ray Vision to uncover Batman’s secret identity in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice?

…and more!

[EDIT: I totally forgot about the interrogation scene where Superman is able to read Hamilton's ID card! That changed the X-Ray Vision analysis some.]

FCTC EPISODE 174: E-MAILS…OCTOBER 2014 EDITION

FCTC 2013 LogoFCTC_Ep_174_Large

Episode 174: E-Mail October 2014 Edition

Welcome to the one hundred and seventy-fourth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index.  Part commentary.  Part history lesson.  All podcast.

At the end of the previous episode Mike and Jeff talked about how they were going to start their coverage of Worlds Collide in this episode.  Well, life being what it is (a fickle beast with a dark sense of humor and terrible timing) the boys couldn’t quite get to that.  They wanted to maintain a regular release schedule of episodes so they decided to look at the e-mail they had received over the past year and read it on the air.  They don’t do this near enough and they feel bad about it but the episodes are packed as it is so the time isn’t always there for e-mail.  So sit back and enjoy this rather laid back episode where Mike and Jeff get to talk about all kinds of Superman stuff, all at the direction of you the listener.

You can subscribe to the show in two ways. First there is the RSS Feed and there is also the iTunes link. Are you on Facebook? Be sure to “like” the official FCTC page, which you can find by clicking on this link.

FCTC EPISODE 173: SUPERMAN/DOOMSDAY HUNTER/PREY

Episode 173: Superman/Doomsday Hunter/Prey

Welcome to the one hundred and seventy-third episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index.  Part commentary.  Part history lesson.  All podcast.

In this special and yet at the same time normal sized episode of the show Mike and Jeff talk about the rematch everyone was talking about in 1994…Superman/Doomsday Hunter/PRey!  The boys talk about all three issues of the prestige format series that saw not only the return of Doomsday but of a certain cyborg as well.  As the story opens Clark is having a rough time sleeping as a recurring nightmares of facing Doomsday and decides that he needs to find the creature that killed him.  Meanwhile Doomsday does indeed return and ends up on Apokolips where he faces off against Darkseid.  If that weren’t bad enough Hank Henshaw also returns and it is up to the Man of Steel to not only save Apokolips but stop both the Cyborg and Doomsday.

We also learn Doomsday’s origin.  That’s kind of important.

You can subscribe to the show in two ways. First there is the RSS Feed and there is also the iTunes link. Are you on Facebook? Be sure to “like” the official FCTC page, which you can find by clicking on this link.

Next time: Well…the boys were going to jump into Worlds Collide and they even said as much at the end of this episode but they decided to go through all of the e-mail they’ve received over the past year instead.  So, next time FEEDBACK and then after that part one of Worlds Collide!

ACTION COMICS 299, April 1963, was published on February 28, 1963. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of 12¢. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein. It featured the Supergirl story in the back of the issue, and was her 9th appearance on the cover of ACTION, and 10th including her solo appearance on the cover of Superman (I misspoke and said that it was her 14th cover appearance, misreading my checklist).

– The 13 page Superman story in this issue was titled, THE STORY OF SUPERMAN’S EXPERIMENTAL ROBOTS, written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Al Plastino. This story has also been reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. IV. It was also Siegel’s 45th silver age Superman story, and his 137th overall for the era. Previously he wrote, THE HELMET OF HATE for SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN 68, April 1963, which was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein.

– The 12 page Supergirl story was titled, THE FANTASTIC SECRET OF SUPERBABY II, written by Leo Dorfman and drawn by Jim Mooney. This story was also reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERGIRL vol. II.

Elsewhere in DC Comics, 29 titles carried the April or April/may 1963 cover date, according to Mike’s Amazing World Of Comics.

Also highlighted in this episode are the ads and other features in this issue, including the METROPOLIS MAILBAG letter column!

The next two episodes will feature the Superman Family comic books cover dated July 1960, Part I: SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE 18, and Part II: SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN 48!

Then we will return to the Superman comic books cover dated May 1963, Part I: SUPERMAN 161, and Part II: ACTION COMICS 300!

MOSAIC Episode 2 – Tangential Trinity – Kryptonian Wonder Woman, Beef with Batman, Sunny Superman

coverblackIn this episode, we cover:

  1. What impact the World Engine scrap might have?
  2. We talked about the open pod and its possible ties to Wonder Woman.
  3. We discussed two ways Superman might tackle Kryptonian technology and how giving humanity access might cause him to come into conflict with Batman.
  4. What Batman’s logical attitude towards Superman could be?
  5. How Batman could have an illogical attitude towards Superman could be justified.
  6. How Man of Steel lays the groundwork for an optimistic Superman.
  7. And my preferences on the approach to the Superman Batman conflict and partnership.

While covering our topics, we touch on the following questions:

  • What’s the deal with the open pod and who was the survivor?
  • Can Superman breath in space?
  • Where should the Fortress of Solitude be?
  • Why would Superman support the proliferation of Kryptonian technology?

…and more!
