NEW SUPERMAN BOOKS FOR 02/15/2017

Below is the list of the new Superman comics I picked up this week.

  • Superman #17
  • Super Sons #1
  • Trinity #6
  • Justice League #15
  • Superman Action Comics Vol. 1: Path of Doom

Super Sons is finally here, which I am beyond excited for.  I wanted that book as soon as DC announced it.  Superman #17 had a really moody cover that I really like.  I picked up the Path of Doom trade because…well, that’s what I do.  I also picked up Superboy #148 to add to my Silver Age collection.  All in all it was a really good week as a Superman fan.  We got another new title (which we share with the Batman folks but I think there’s room at the table for everyone), another trade and the main books continue to be amazing.

I “picked up” a handful of digital books as well.  I bought a few more than usual this week because my tax return came in.

  • Action Comics (1991) #s 25, 26, 720-724 and 750
  • Adventures of Superman (1987) #s 534-537
  • Superman (1987) #s 111-114
  • Superman: The Man of Steel (1991) #s 55-59
  • Superman: The Man of Tomorrow (1995) #s 5 and 6

List of Books Released Digitally

In case you were interested in a complete list of Superman books now available over on Comixology…

  • Action Comics (1938) #s 25, 26, 749 and 750
  • Adventures of Superman (1987) #s 562 and 563
  • DC Comics Presents (1978) #s 53-55
  • Superman (1987) #s 139 and 140
  • Superman: The Man of Steel (1991) #s 83 and 84
  • Superman: The Man of Tomorrow (1995) #11
  • Superman and Batman vs. Aliens and Predator #s 1 and 2

Still no sign of the Superman Red/Superman Blue special, Superman Forever #1 and I am not seeing the Superman: Save The Planet special either.  This is a bit annoying.  If you are reading these books for the first time those specials are necessary to the ongoing Superman narrative.  DC and Comixology continue to leave money on the table.

FCTC EPISODE 203 – APRIL 1995 PART 1

Episode 203: April 1995 Part 1

Welcome to the two hundredth and third episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index.  Part commentary.  Part history lesson.  All podcast.

Normal coverage returns this time out with Mike and Jeff tackling the first part of the Superman books with a cover date of April 1995.  First up is the wrap up to the Deathtrap story in Superman: The Man of Steel #43.  Superman and Mister Miracle are in trouble so Miracle’s wife Big Barda suits up to lend a hand.  Then Agent Liberty returns in Superman #99 and we are introduced to a new villain named Arclight.  This issue also features the amazing battle of the conservative vs the liberal between Agent Liberty and Lois Lane!  The boys also look at Superboy #14 and New Titans #120 before hopping into a cab to the feature they like to call Meanwhile, At The Daily Planet!

If you want more information on the New Titans issue covered in this episode be sure to check out Tom Panarese’s My Life as a Teen Titan feature over on his fantastic blog Pop Culture Affidavit.

THAT COVERS IT – WIZARD THE GUIDE TO COMICS #59

Here’s another cover that I didn’t know existed until recently.

When I bought this issue of Wizard: The Guide to Comics back in 1996 it had a character named Shi on the cover.  Recently I discovered it had an alternate Superman cover and found it for a reasonable price on eBay.  To be honest I’m not all that hot on this piece but that has nothing to do with Joe Quesada or Jimmy Palmiotti.  Normally I like their art but the blank eyed stare of Superman is off putting.  I do like that they have him flying up through some clouds.  At least that’s what I think is going on here.  No matter where the Man of Steel is flying this is a rare Superman piece by Quesada and Palmiotti.  Quesada is more known for his Batman work at DC and Palmiotti has written a number of series for the publisher but Superman is not a name I would associate with either man.

This issue of Wizard had an article about the then upcoming Superman: The Animated Series, which explains his presence on this alternate cover.

NEW SUPERMAN BOOKS FOR THE WEEK OF 02/08/2017

Below is a the list of new Superman books I picked up this week.

  • Action Comics #973
  • Supergirl #6
  • Superwoman #7
  • New Super-Man #8
  • Red Hood and the Outlaws #7
  • Justice League/Power Rangers #2

Action continues to be my favorite of the main Superman titles but I am really digging on Superman right now as well, which is a nice position to be in.  I am hoping that my schedule will open up a bit so I can sit down and get caught up on all of the satellite titles because I want to type something other than, “those books are building up but I’m looking forward to reading them.”  The only title that I am waiting until it’s done and dusted to read is Justice League/Powers Rangers.  I’m buying that more out of a combination of obligation and novelty than anything else.

I do find it interesting that DC keeps putting out all of the satellite books on the same week.  You would think they would want to stretch it out.  On the other hand it makes the other weeks lighter on my wallet, so there’s that.

I went to the one day Atlanta Comic Convention last Sunday and picked up a few Silver Age Superboy books out of the two dollar box.  They aren’t in mint condition but they’re not whipped to hell either.  Between that and hitting the 50% off bin at Dave’s Comics in Fayetteville I managed to snag Superboy #s 109, 126, 146, 150, 157, 162, 169, 170 and 174 for a very reasonable price.  Part of me wants to get more serious about filling in the Silver Age holes in my collection but I need to cut back on what I’m spending on comics for various reasons.  I guess the time has come to look at the non-Superman books I have on my pull list and decide which ones need to go.

Digital Comics

My digital focus shifted this week now that I’ve finished picking up what was available from the Electric Blue era.  I bought a handful of books from 1995 and 1996 that Jeff and I will be covering or have covered on FCTC in the next year or so.  These include:

  • Action Comics (1938) #s 708, 709, 718, 719
  • Adventures of Superman (1987) #s 521, 522, 532, 533
  • Superman (1987) #s 98, 99, 109, 110
  • Superman: The Man of Steel (1991) #s 42, 43, 53, 54
  • Superman: The Man of Tomorrow (1995) #4

I also picked up Action Comics (1938) #s 22 and 24 because they were a buck a piece.

In case you were curious here’s a list of the Superman back issues that were released digitally this week.

  • Action Comics (1938) #s 747 and 748
  • Adventures of Superman (1987) #s 560 and 561
  • DC Comics Presents (1978) #s 50-52
  • Superman (1987) #s 137 and 138
  • Superman: The Man of Steel (1991) #s 81 and 82

SECRET FILES FRIDAY – MARTHA AND JONATHAN KENT

Welcome to another installment of Secret Files Friday!  Each week I present another entry from the various Secret Files and Origins specials that started popping up in late 1997.  While they weren’t as detailed as Who’s Who I have a real soft spot for the Secret Files and Origins line so I wanted to give them some love.  The week’s entry is Martha and Jonathan Kent!

FCTC EPISODE 202 – MORE LOIS & CLARK SEASON 2 TALK

Episode 201 – Still More Season 2 Lois & Clark Talk

This time out Mike and Jeff return after one of their patented hiatuses to talk about three episodes of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.  It’s a seriously mixed bag of shows this time out too.  In Metallo a classic Superman villain is brought to the series in the form of Mallory’s boyfriend from Family Ties.  This is followed by The Chi of Steel where Superman has to face off against evil martial artists while Lois and Clark completely ignore a story worth pursuing.  Oh and sexism is bad, mmmkay?  Finally there is The Eyes Have It where Superman loses his eyesight and hilarity ensues.

Allegedly.

Thanks to everyone for being patient with us over the past year.  We can’t promise it will never happen again but we can promise to do our very best to make sure it doesn’t.
