FOB SHOWCASE PRESENTS – MIKE AND RACHEL VS MARVEL PHASE 3 PART 3

Mike and Rachel vs Marvel Phase 3 Part 3 – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Welcome to the third installment of a Fortress of Baileytude Showcase Presents mini-series… Mike and Rachel vs Marvel Phase 3!  The premise of this series is simple; Mike and his wife Rachel watch one of the Marvel Phase 3 films and then talk/argue about them.  This is all a part of the Fortress’ desire to catch a few new listeners based on the upcoming release of Avengers: Infinity War.

Because coat tails were meant for riding.

This is the shortest installment of Mike and Rachel vs Marvel Phase 3 but sometimes if you really like something you don’t have much to say about it.  Such is the glory of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.  Mike tells the story of the time he talked to the head make-up artist for Drax the Destroyer and also relates the time the son of one his high school friends schooled Mike on how to pronounce the name “Thanos”.  Rachel talks about the things she liked about the movie and how the ending made her cry.  The Baileys also mount a spirited defense of the Zune.

And they mention the Irredeemable Shag, but they didn’t say his name three times so he didn’t appear.

FOB SHOWCASE PRESENTS – MIKE AND RACHEL VS MARVEL PHASE 3 PART 2

Mike and Rachel vs Marvel Phase 3 Part 2 – Doctor Strange

Welcome to the second installment of a Fortress of Baileytude Showcase Presents mini-series… Mike and Rachel vs Marvel Phase 3!  For the next six days you’ll be getting a new episode where Mike and his wife Rachel watch one of the Marvel Phase 3 films and then talk/argue about them.  This is all a part of the Fortress’ desire to catch a few new listeners based on the upcoming release of Avengers: Infinity War.

Because coat tails were meant for riding.

This time out Mike and Rachel talk about Doctor Strange, which they loved but had one or two problems with.  Most of these problems have to do with the first act but overall it’s a pretty positive discussion where Mike talks about how he sees this film in the context of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe and Rachel proves that, for her, with great power comes the ability to mess with the neighbors that make her mad.

She probably wouldn’t abuse such powers.  Much.

Mike also goes into how the Marvel films have given refuge to actors from other, bad comic book films and the secret plot of the movie Spotlight.

FOB SHOWCASE PRESENTS – MIKE AND RACHEL VS MARVEL PHASE 3 PART 1

Mike and Rachel Vs Marvel Phase 3 Part 1 – Captain America: Civil War

Welcome to the first installment of a Fortress of Baileytude Showcase Presents mini-series Mike and Rachel vs Marvel Phase 3!

For this first installment Mike and Rachel watched Captain America: Civil War, the game changing entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe based on the 2006 comic book event.  Well…loosely based.  And better.  Much better.  With characters acting in character and actions stemming from past stories instead of being shoehorned in based on what the writer needs at the moment.

So much better than the comics.

Rachel has a bunch of questions about certain aspects of the movie and Mike goes into how it compares to the comic book version of the story.  What did they like about the film?  What didn’t they like about the film?  Listen and find out.

VIEWS FROM THE LONGBOX EPISODE 264: A LIFE IN FANDOM AND A SENSE OF WONDER

Episode 264: A Life in Fandom and A Sense of Wonder

I’m a big believer in knowing where you come from.  I think having a sense of history is important, which is probably why I loved DC’s legacy characters back in the ’90s and early 2000’s.  I consider Barry Allen meeting Jay Garrick to be one of the most important events in comic book history.

Which is why it’s such a big deal that my guest for this episode is Bill Schelly.

If you aren’t familiar with Bill and his history in comic book fandom and his writings on the history of the medium than you will be by the end of this episode.  Ostensibly Bill is here to promote the release of Sense of Wonder: My Life in Comic Fandom — The Whole Story, which comes out today, but the main reason I wanted to have Bill on the show is to talk to someone that did this sort of thing before I did.  You’ll get to hear how Bill got into comics in the early sixties, his time creating fanzines, a fateful encounter with editors at DC Comics, his short lived life as a comic book retailer and so much more.

In talking with Bill I got the sense of what it must have been like for Barry Allen to meet Jay Garrick and I can’t thank him enough for that.

You can purchase a copy of Sense of Wonder: My Life in Comic Fandom — The Whole story by clicking on this link.  Even if you have read the previous version you need to pick up this updated and expanded edition.  It’s an emotional story and one that is worth your time and money.  While your at it follow this link to check out Bill’s other books and then head on over to his site by clicking on this link to order books that aren’t available on Amazon.

Next Time: The (extremely late) first part to my Views 10th Anniversary celebration!

FCTC EPISODE 211 – DEATH OF CLARK KENT EPILOGUE

Episode 211: Death of Clark Kent Epilogue

Welcome to the two hundredth and eleventh episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index.  Part commentary.  Part history lesson.  All podcast.

A new era dawns as the boys (finally) finish up The Death of Clark Kent and begin talking about a brand new Superman title!  In Superman #102 the Man of Steel teams up with the World’s Mightiest Mortal or rather Superman has a bit of a dust up with Captain Marvel thanks to both heroes seeing the other as one of their deadliest enemies.  Lois and Clark are reunited in Adventures of Superman #525 and not only does it feel so good, but the creators explore why Clark needs a secret identity.  This is followed by Superman: The Man of Tomorrow #1, which not only brings Roger Stern back to the Superman as a writer but also brings Lex Luthor back…back again…Lex is back…tell a friend.  Finally Mike and Jeff looks at the side books that came out during this cover month which includes Steel #17, Showcase ’95 #7 (at least the Mongul story in that book), Outsiders #20 and Loose Cannon #2!

Special guest appearance by a cricket somewhere near where Jeff was recording!
