VIEWS FROM THE LONGBOX EPISODE 265: 10 THINGS IN 10 YEARS

Episode 265: 10 Things In 10 Years

Well…this is awkward.

So, it’s almost fitting that this episode is over a year late.  I think one of the hallmarks of Views From The Longbox as a show is that I would record stuff and then release it months later because of…reasons.  In keeping with that “tradition” here is the first episode in a two part extravaganza designed to celebrate the show’s 10th anniversary, which is coming out over a year after I recorded it.  This was done on purpose because you probably expect nothing less.

At least that’s the story I’m sticking to.

In this first part of a two part celebration of Views as a show I sit down with good friend and long time ally of mine, Big Honkin’ Steve (check out his podcasts over here) to talk about how things have changed for us as both podcasters and geeks over the past ten years.  A lot has happened since June of 2007, both in terms of us as fans and the geek world in general.  I came up with a list of ten things that stood out and over three hours Steve and I go through that list.  How has the technology of doing these shows changed?  What was the podcasting landscape like back in ’07 as compared to 2017?  What about the television and film worlds?  What about Superman?  Together, Steve and I ask these questions and others and answer them and probably sound like we’re two old men yelling a clouds and telling kids to get off our lawns.

Sort of.  We’re mostly positive.

Thanks to Steve for appearing on the show.  He is a much better friend than I deserve.

Next Time: I finally wrangle Andy and Shag on a show together.

FORTRESS OF BAILEYTUDE SHOWCASE PRESENTS…MY FAVORITE STAN STORY

FOBSP: My Favorite Stan Story

On November 12, 2018 Stan Lee passed away.  To say that he was an important creative force in comic books is a gross underestimation of what he meant not only to fandom but the world in general.  Stan Lee co-created dozens of characters and wrote hundreds of comic books but for me personally there was one creation that stands above them all.

The Incredible Hulk.

So I thought it was appropriate to take about an hour and a half to talk about my history with the Hulk and why I love the character so much but more importantly I take a look at my single favorite Stan Lee written comic ever…Incredible Hulk #1.  Sprinkled throughout are some sound clips of the man himself about the creation of the Hulk plus a Power Records style performance of Incredible Hulk #1.

Stan Lee was a lot of things to a lot of people.  To some he was a figure of controversy.  To others he was the best ambassador comic book ever had.  He was a writer, an editor, a creator and a larger than life figure.  To me he was the guy that introduced the cartoons I was watched as a kid and part of the creative force behind the best Marvel comics character ever created.  He will be missed.

RIP Stan.  I hope you are at peace now.

Here are some pages from the comic discussed in this episode.

FCTC EPISODE 223: SEPTEMBER 1995 SUPPLEMENTAL

Episode 223: September 1995 Supplemental

Welcome to the two hundredth and twenty-third episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

On this thrill (and technical difficulties) packed episode Mike and Jeff look at the supplemental books published with a September 1995 cover date.  First up on the docket is Superboy #19, where we find out who Champion is and get to see Knockout’s dark side.  Then in Steel #19 John Henry and the really bad ‘90s characters mount a final assault on Hazard and Black Ops and the final page is a kick in the pants.  For John, anyway.  Mike and Jeff are pretty much neutral on the ending.  Then the boys blitz through New Titans #125, Outsiders #22, Showcase ’95 #8 (which is actually really good), and Loose Cannon #4.  Finally, Mike and Jeff look at what else is going on the DCU during this month as well as looking at what happened in the real world and film in segments they like to call Elsewhere in the DCU and Meanwhile, At The Daily Planet.

(Technical Note: You are not imagining things if Mike’s voice sounds a little strange.  The boys record this over Skype and for some bizarre and unknown reason Mike’s voice got pitched down something fierce.  He tried to compensate in editing but there are moments where he sounds a little deeper than normal.  Mike has no idea why this is happening.  It seems to be a Skype thing.  It could be the recording software.  Anyway, it didn’t ruin the episode but it’s there.  So…heads up and stuff.)

Below is a gallery of covers and selected pages from the comics discussed.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 26: ANNUALS AND SEQUELS

Episode 25: Annuals and Sequels

Welcome to the twenty-sixth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight.  The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.  In the second episode of the month they discuss the various books that were associated with the animated Batman shows of the nineties, though just about everything is fair game.

This time out the guys review at the first annuals of the two animated tie-in books they’ve been looking at over the past year.  Batman Adventures Annual #1 turns the title into an anthology book as Batman examines his rogues gallery and wonders if he ever came close to having one of them walk the straight and narrow.  Then, in Batman and Robin Adventures Annual #1, we are treated to a sequel to the greatest Batman film ever released into theaters.  No, not Dark Knight.  Not 1966’s Batman: The Movie.  Not even the 1989 Batman film.  No, this story is the sequel to Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and features the return of Bruce’s lost love, Andrea.

It’s pretty keen.  Then again all of the stories are pretty keen.  This was a good episode for Batman stories.

Below is a gallery of images from the books discussed in this episode.

Next Time: A special tribute to Norm Breyfogle.

FORTRESS OF BAILEYTUDE SHOWCASE PRESENTS…REMEMBERING NORM BREYFOGLE

FOBSP: Remebering Norm Breyfogle

On September 24, 2018 artist Norm Breyfogle passed away.  Breyfogle was an extremely talented artist and is probably best known for his work on Detective Comics, Batman, and Batman: Shadow of the Bat.  He was definitely my favorite Batman artist when I was reading the books in 1989 and 1990.  Because of this I wanted to talk about how his work had an impact on me but I’m not alone for this conversation.  Joining me is Tom Panarese, host or co-host of such shows as Pop Culture Affidavit, In Country and Required Reading With Tom and Stella.  Through the course of the hour or so that we talk Tom and I cover a lot of ground; where we first remember seeing Norm’s work, things we loved about his style, some of the moments or pages that stand out for us and a discussion on Batman in general.

Norm was an amazing artist.  He will be missed.

During the course of the discussion we talk about certain pages and covers that stood out to us.  Below is a gallery of those images.

Next Time: Donovan Morgan Grant and I versus Batman v Superman.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 25: THE ONE WHERE BATMAN SAVES DENNY O’NEIL

Episode 25: The One Where Batman Saves Denny O’Neil

Welcome to the twenty-fifth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight.  The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.  In the second episode of the month they discuss the various books that were associated with the animated Batman shows of the nineties, though just about everything is fair game.

This time out Andy and Mike talk about some…weird stories.  In Batman #318 we are introduced to Firebug…became the name Firefly was already taken.  In all seriousness this is an interesting story that once again feels like it would have been home on one of the action/super-hero shows that were on television when this issues was on the stands.  A man dressed in an amazing red and yellow costume is setting fires to get revenge for his family.  What happened?  Listen and find out.  Then they talk about the Batman story from Detective Comics #487 where Batman has to protect a writer that has gotten into the cross-hairs of the League of Assassins because they just happened to hear him talking to himself as he was jogging by.

Seriously.  That’s what caught their attention.

Below is a gallery of images from the books discussed in this episode.

And here is a gallery of the ads that the guys yakked about this time out.
