OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 32: DREADFUL BIRTHDAYS AND CARAMEL APPLES

Episode 32: Dreadful Birthdays and Caramel Apples

Welcome to the thirty-second episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight.  The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.  In one episode they will talk about Bat books from the late seventies and early eighties.  In another episode they will talk about the animated Adventures titles that DC published in the nineties.  Sometimes they talk about whatever strikes their fancy.

Up for discussion this time out is one of the greatest Joker stories ever published.  And that’s not hyperbole.  Batman #321 has been reprinted in The Greatest Joker Stories Ever ToldStacked Deck: The Greatest Stories Ever ToldBatman in the EightiesJoker: The Greatest Stories Ever Told, and Tales of the Batman: Len Wein.  And for good reason.  This is a classic tale of the Harlequin of Hate by Len Wein and Walter Simonson that Andy and Mike…don’t have much to say about.  It’s weird.  It’s a fantastic story, but they don’t have much commentary.  Likewise they have little to say about Brave and the Bold #160, which guest stars Supergirl and is a fun, little story.  There is also a brief but substantive conversation about Kylie Minogue.

Below is a gallery of images from the books discussed in this episode.

Next Time: The year long celebration of Batman’s 80th birthday begins!

TRAILER – THE OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT CELEBRATES BATMAN’S 80TH BIRTHDAY

Overlooked Dark Knight 80th Birthday Trailer

While there is one more episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight hitting in April (check that out on Tuesday, folks) I wanted to announce the plans that Andy and I have for the show to celebrate Batman’s 80th birthday.  Not content to just devote a single month to the Caped Crusader’s entry into octogenarian status, we’re going to devote an entire year’s worth of episodes to looking at Batman stories from all eras that are either overlooked (hence the name of the show) or are just too cool not to cover.  We’ll also be doing special episodes, like the one devoted to the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Batman film, as well as off beat episodes, like the one where we choose what issues of Detective Comics we would choose for a big, hardcover collection.

The party starts on May 19th.  Click on the link above to listen to the trailer and feel free to share it on your social media feed or podcast!  We would sure appreciate it.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 31: FILL INS ABOUND

Episode 31: Fill In Stories Abound

Welcome to the thirty-first episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight.

This time out the guys deal with two fill-in stories, which isn’t to say that the stories are bad.  They’re enjoyable, but they kind of mess with the flow of the story lines that Andy and Mike have been covering.  In Batman #320, the Dark Knight travels to Spain to deal with a mystery that involves secret passages and Catholicism.  Then, in Detective Comics #488, the whole dealing with the death of Kathy Kane thing takes a back seat once again to deal with a tale of novelists and switching places, which is fun and has some great Don Newton art.  Ads are discussed and a Star Wars conversation goes down.  This one has it all.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 30: FAKE NEWS

Episode 30: Fake News

Welcome to the thirtieth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight.

Andy and Mike dive back in the tie-in books this time out as they look at two extremely fun and well done comics.  In Batman Adventures #5, the guys pick up where they left off last time with the Scarecrow and his plot to make Gotham illiterate.  There’s action, some neat psychological profiling and mirrored storytelling, so this one pretty much has it all.  Then, in Batman and Robin Adventures #6, Robin is fired!  Well, not really, but that’s what the fake news at the failing Gotham Inquisitor would have you believe.  The only problem is most of the people believe what was published in the newspaper and suddenly Robins start popping up all over the city to try and get the job.  Dick Grayson is not pleased with this and we also get some fun references to other Robins, including a young red head named Carrie.

Next Time: Back to 1979…sort of.  We’ll explain next time.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 29: SECOND VERSE SAME AS THE FIRST

Episode 29: Second Verse Same As The First

Welcome to the twenty-ninth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight.

This time out Andy and Mike talk about a returning villain as well as a fun, but slightly flawed team-up with Wonder Woman.  In Batman #319, The Gentlemen Ghost returns to bedevil the Caped Crusader.  The guys also talk about the hints of a story to come and reference a song from the sixties that is a bit of an ear worm.  Then, in Brave and the Bold #158, Batman and Wonder Woman battle a French villain named Deja Vu.

Seriously.  That’s the villain’s name.  The story itself is quite good but at the same time…it’s a French villain…named Deja Vu.

Below is a gallery of images from the books discussed in this episode.

During the course of the episode, Mike mentioned a video over at Retroblasting where Michael French breaks down the various Super Friends home media releases.  Check that out below.

Mike also mentioned an episode of Dreamland: The Retroblasing Podcast that he appeared on to discuss Bill Finger and his place in Batman’s history.  You can find that episode by clicking on this link.
