Episode 18: A Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events or Shirt Rips & Phone Booths & Pain

The BAM Crew (Bethany, Alison, and Michael) are back with a brand new, oversized episode!  This time out they are discussing the eleventh episode of Superman and Lois, which was titled A Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events.  

And there were some legit Cataclysmic Events in this episode.

There was a lot to unpack about this episode between the flashbacks and the ending and the fact that there is someone who is a bigger jerk than Hologramps.  Alison has some amazing obscervations (including something about Baby Jordan), Bethany waxes Tyler Hoechlin’s car, and Michael discusses why Bitsie Tulloch may be his favorite live action Lois ever.  The Crew also goes through a whole bunch of audience feedback, which is why the episode is a tad longer than usual.

This is not meant as a complaint.  Please, send more feedback!

Episode 256: Kingdom Come Part 2

Welcome to the two hundredth and fifty-sixth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Mike and Jeff continue their coverage of the epic four issue mini-series turned graphic novel Kingdom Come.  In this installment, they discuss the final two issues and cover a lot of ground.  There is a debate on whether or not the newer super powered beings in the story could be classified as villains or not.  The boys also discuss whether or not Superman and Wonder Woman would ever ultimately work out as a couple, what “pulling a Geoff Johns” means, the deeper themes of the story, and whether Diana was right and wrong about her approach to the ending.  They also discuss the epilogue, which was exclusive to the collected edition.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 53: UNDER THE HOOD PART 3

Episode 53: Under the Hood Part 3

Welcome to the fifty-third episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.

This time out Andy and Mike continue their series of episodes where they talk about the Batman: Under The Hood trade paperback.  To be fair, they continue that talk about 40 minutes into the episode because they spend the first 2,400 seconds on the longest tangent in the show’s history.  It’s quality conversation.  They promise.

Anyway, the guys continue their trek into this trade by talking about Batman issues 646-648.  There are explosions, a little bit of the ultra violence, and betrayals as the Red Hood ups the ante of his war on the Black Mask.  Deathstroke enters the picture and offers Black Mask a membership into The Society, which makes perfect sense if you were following the larger DC Universe at the time these books came out but is probably bewildering to those that are reading this book in the here and now.  There’s a fight with some mid-level super villains and it all ends on a major cliffhanger.

THE SUPERMAN AND LOIS TAPES EPISODE 17: O MOTHER WHERE ART THOU OR A KRYPTON MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW

Episode 17: O Mother Where Art Thou or A Krypton Man of Constant Sorrow

The BAM Crew (Bethan, Alison, and Michael) are back and boy do they have thoughts on episode 10 of Superman and Lois Season 1.  O Mother Where Art Thou was emotional and things escalated quickly.  And then continued escalating.  And then really escalated.  It was quite the ride.

Anyway, Bethany gives us her thoughts on Sam Lane’s use of torture, Alison talks about how this episode had a real “season finale” feel to it, and Michael admits what part of the episode made him cry.  There’s also talk about how great Jonathan is, Sarah’s attitude towards her parents, how a certain character really likes to play the long game, and more.  Bethany reveals who had the most punachable face and Michael gives not one, but two lessons as part of the Professor Bailey’s Superman 101 segment.

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 255: KINGDOM COME PART 1

Episode 255: Kingdom Come Part 1

Welcome to the two hundredth and fifty-fifth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Mike and Jeff interrupt their normal coverage for a special three-part series covering one of the most important Superman stories of the nineties.

This time out Mike and Jeff begin their coverage of Kingdom Come, which was originally published from May to August in 1996 as a four issue prestige format mini-series and now lives as an evergreen collected edition.  This story was watershed moment for DC Comics, not just in terms of its influence on later stories but also as line in the sand for where DC was going to take its super-hero universe for the rest of the nineties.  This wasn’t the intent of the story, but it did line up with a larger initiative to focus on the characters of the universe instead of falling back on the tropes that were popular in the early nineteen-nineties.

During this installment, the boys discuss the first two issues of Kingdom Come, which were titled Strange Visitor and Truth and Justice, respectively.  It’s twenty years in the future and the super-powered beings run amok, not caring about the collateral damage their rumbles cause.  After a tragedy in Kansas, The Spectre approaches Pastor Normal McCay and recruits him to be the guide through the current DC Universe and to help in judgment of a tragedy to come.  Norman and The Spectre bear witness to Superman coming out of retirement and reforming the Justice League.  But is Superman making the right decisions?  What about the Batman and his forces?  And what about Lex Luthor and his Mankind Liberation Front?  All three factions work to save the world, which could lead to Armageddon. Mike and Jeff discuss these issues in depth as well as giving a brief history of how Kingdom Come came about.

THE SUPERMAN AND LOIS TAPES EPISODE 16: LOYAL SUBJEKTS OR BOY, THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY

Episode 16: Loyal Subjekts or Boy, That Escalated Quickly

The BAM Crew (Bethany, Alison, and Michael) are back with their coverage of episode 9 of Superman and Lois, which was titled Loyal Subjekts.  It could have also been titled Boy, That Escalated Quickly or The Aesthetics Were Very Pleasing.

Seriously.  None of The Crew was expecting a thirst trap but one was tripped nonetheless.

Anyway, things go from bad to worse as Lois, Chrissy, and Clark dig deeper into why Morgan Edge is so fixated on Smallville, Lois has a confrontation with Edge that surprised Michael, Jordan gets a new super-power while also getting extremely ill, Jonathan seriously ups his game via weaponry, Kyle gets the crazy eyes, and Morgan Edge reveals something really, really, really important to Superman, leading to one of the best cliffhangers of the series thus far.

This time out Andy and Mike continue their way through the Batman: Under The Hood trade paperback by looking at Batman issues 639 thru 641 and 645.  The Red Hood continues to work his way through the underworld of Gotham and has a serious run in with Onyx.  Batman has conversations with Zatanna and Green Arrow that tie into other events going on the DCU that make sense if you know what’s going on but are puzzling if you don’t.  Batman also meets up with Superman and Mike has a serious problem with one of Batman’s comments.

THE SUPERMAN AND LOIS TAPES EPISODE 15: HOLDING THE WRENCH OR WE’RE NOT CRYING, YOU’RE CRYING

Episode 15: Holding The Wrench or We’re Not Crying, You’re Crying

The BAM Crew (Bethany, Alison, and Michael) is back with an emotional episode about an emotional episode.  This time out they discuss the eighth episode of Superman and Lois, which was titled Holding The Wrench.  The bulk of the episode is spent discussing Lois and her therapy and the revelation made during the episode.  Bethany and Alison talk about how they would have appreciated a trigger warning for what was discussed, but “the revelation” is discussed in detail, as is the concept of normalizing mental health care in our society.  The Crew also talks about Jonathan’s stand out performance in the episode, how Clark is a good husband, how Kyle keeps breaking our hearts, and, of course, who has The Most Punchable Face.

No Professor Bailey’s Superman 101 this time out because there wasn’t anything Mike could hang a lesson plan around.

Episode 254: August 1996 Part 2

Welcome to the two hundredth and fifty-fourth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Mike and Jeff finish up their coverage of the August 1996 cover dated books and things get really dramatic, especially between Lois and Superman.  In Action Comics #724, Brawl (you know, the character that looks like what happens when Jimmy Olsen and Blanka from Street Fighter 2 had a one-night stand) returns and Superman has to take him on, but it becomes clear that things aren’t what they seem.  Then, in Superman: The Man of Steel #59, the Parasite makes his move, but the real drama is the continuing deterioration of Lois and Clark’s relationship.  Also, Lois receives a job offer from Franklin Stern.  After that, the boys discuss, Hey, Wha’ Happened in the rest of the DC Universe by looking at the Superman Family books, which includes Steel #29, Superboy #30, Showcase ’96 #7, and the two Legends of the Dead Earth annuals Superman Annual #8 and Superboy Annual #3
