FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 258: SEPTEMBER 1996 PART 1

Episode 258: September 1996 Part 1

Welcome to the two hundredth and fifty-eighth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

This time out Mike and Jeff return to their regular programming by kicking off their examination of the September 1996 cover dated books.  First up is Superman #115, where Lois makes a fateful decision about her future and tells her parents about the break-up with Clark.  Lucy Lane also introduces her new boyfriend to the family before Lois leaves on a jet plane.  Then, in Adventures of Superman #538, Superman has to contend with a broken heart and a new villain named Obsession who is…obsessed with the Man of Steel.  Jimmy is also a serious jerk through this whole issue.  The boys wrap up the episode by asking, “Hey, Wha’ Happened?” in the real world when these books were on the stands.

Below are the covers and select pages from the two main books Mike and Jeff discussed during this episode.

And here are three panels from Superman #115 and Man of Steel (1986) #2 to show the homages Ron Frenz was doing during this issue.

FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS EPISODE 257: KINGDOM COME EPILOGUE

Episode 257: Kingdom Come Epilogue

Welcome to the two hundredth and fifty-seventh episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Mike and Jeff conclude their coverage of Kingdom Come (finally) with an episode jam packed with all kinds of Kingdom Come extras.  At the top of the episode, the boys interview writer Elliot S! Maggin.  Elliot is one of the preeminent Superman writers, not only of the Bronze Age but of all time.  He has written the Man of Steel in the comics and in prose and it’s the prose side of things that Mike and Jeff wanted to talk to him about because Elliot wrote the novel version of Kingdom Come.  The boys ask Elliot about the process of writing the book, his thoughts about the story of Kingdom Come, his thoughts about Superman as a character, and also about his Superman work from before the mandate of this show.

After that Mike and Jeff dig into the collected editions and merchandise associated with Kingdom Come.  This includes the various hardcovers, absolutes, and softcover collections, the trading card set, the action figures, and the audio drama.  There are several digressions along the way comparing the merchandise from this series to the merchandise that came out with other big time comic book events.  Then, after the credits, more with Elliot S! Maggin!

Below are the covers and select pages from the two main books Mike and Jeff discussed during this episode.

Here are the links to the Kingdom Come related episodes of Views From The Longbox and Dorkness to Light that Mike recorded with Professor Alan and Em Middleton back in 2016.

And here is a link to the various Elliot S! Maggin written books that you can buy.  Mike particularly recommends Superman: Last Son and Superman: Miracle Monday.

Finally, here is a piece that Mike got from artist and podcaster Jarrod Alberich of the Kingdom Come Superman.  Check out Jarrod’s podcasting efforts at The Longbox Crusade and his art site is his site The Yard Sale Artist.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 54: UNDER THE HOOD PART 4

Episode 54: Under The Hood Part 4

Welcome to the fifty-fourth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.

This time out Andy and Mike continue their series of episodes where they talk about the Batman: Under The Hood trade paperback.  And this time out they actually finish the darn thing and boy do things go pear shaped right there at the end.  Batman #649 and 650 were fine, though the guys had issues about how closely the story was tied to the then lead up to Infinite Crisis.  Then they talk about Batman Annual #25 and if you listen closely you can hear the moment where Andy loses all hope in humanity (generally) and this story (specifically).

He has some thoughts.

Mike did too, but Andy was more passionate about his.

Then they swerve right there at the end and cover some listener feedback.  That wasn’t the original intention for the episode, but things happened in post production and everything worked out.

Below are the covers and select pages from the comics discussed in this episode…
