Episode 56: Superman & Batman Generations Part 1
Welcome to the fifty-sixth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.
This time out Andy and Mike begin a four part series that will look at two Elseworlds series featuring the World’s Finest team. In 1998, DC began publishing Superman & Batman: Generations, a four issue prestige format series that spanned the decades and asked the question, “What if Superman and Batman appeared for the first time in the late thirties and then aged in real time?” Written and drawn by John Byrne, this series not only paid homage to the eras the individual stories took place in but also paid homage to the legacy of Superman and Batman.
For this installment the guys go through the first two issues, which have four stories that take place in 1939, 1949, 1959, and 1969. From the gritty golden age stories where the two heroes didn’t take crap from anyone to a team-up between the Joker and Lex Luthor to a whimsical tale featuring Bat-Mite and Mister Mxyzptlk to a heartbreaking tale where Robin dies and Batman lives again. There are also some fun tangents, including one about the Tyler Hoechlin Superman and some singing towards the end.
Below is a gallery of the covers and select pages from the comics discussed during this episode.
