Episode 72 – A Spooky Batman Story (with guest Jim Beard)
Welcome to the seventy-second episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.
This time out Andy and Mike actually stick to the mandate of the show by talking about a Batman story that doesn’t get a lot of love. And they are not alone! Joining the guys for this episode is Jim Beard, who, in addition to being a writer and editor, is also a lifelong Batman fan. In fact, he is the one that suggested that Andy and Mike cover what they cover, which is Batman #252! The Batman once again goes up against The Spook, which is kind of impressive considering the man that is The Spook is supposed to be dead! The trio also looks at the Robin back-up, which features a character that is supposed to be a take off of Danny Kaye, which just confuses all three of them.
Below is the cover and select pages from the comic discussed during this episode.
As Mike mentioned during the episode, Jim has written and/or edited a bunch of books over the years. You can find a complete list over at Amazon by following this link. The books that might appeal to a Batman fan include Gotham City 14 Miles, the three volumes of The Subterranean Blue Grotto Essays on Batman ’66, and, most recently, The Old Order Changeth! The Enchancement and Embroidering of Superhero Origins. That last one also contains an essay written by Mike about the evolution on the origin of Batman in the comics! Mike also has an essay in the third volume of The Subterranean Blue Grotto Essays series. So, check all of those out and buy them because they are keen.
