Episode 67 – Batman: Hidden Treasures

Ron Marz provided the script for the story and before you know it DC has a new Bernie Wrightson Batman story to sell. The fact that it’s really good helped too. The guys chat about the story and the reprint of Swamp Thing #7 that was in the back of the book. They also go on several tangents involving Superman and Lois, music, and so much more.

Below are the covers and select pages from the comic discussed during this epiosde.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT PRESENTS…A TRIBUTE TO NEAL ADAMS

Overlooked Dark Knight Presents…A Tribute to Neal Adams

Welcome to another very special episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where normally the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.

This time out it’s another tribute episode. Andy and Mike take a look at two stories drawn by Neal Adams, one of the most influential Batman artists ever. Neither of these stories could be described as overlooked, but the guys chose them anyway. First up is Batman #232, which features the first appearance of Ra’s Al Ghul. This is followed by Batman #255, which sees Batman facing off against an honest to goodness werewolf. The guys dive deep into Adams’ art on both stories, while also discussing the writing of them as well. They even chat about the episode of Batman: The Animated Series that adapted both of these tales. More than anything they talk about what Neal Adams meant to Batman and meant to them personally.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT PRESENTS…A TRIBUTE TO GEORGE PEREZ

Overlooked Dark Knight Presents…A Tribute to George Perez

Welcome to a special episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, normally look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.

But not this day.

This time out Andy and Mike are presenting one of two tribute episodes to artists that are sadly no matter with us. First up is a memorial to George Perez. Perez is a legendary artist and writer, but he didn’t write or draw the Dark Knight near as much as he did Superman or Wonder Woman or even Dick Grayson, whether he was Robin or Nightwing. One of the exceptions was the covers to the Batman issues and the interiors (to one extent or another) of the New Titans of the historic storyline A Lonely Place of DyingThis story introduced us to Tim Drake, the (technically) third iteration of Robin. Mike and Andy talk about the era of comics this came from, Perez’ art work, the story as a whole, and what Perez meant to them.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 66 – BATMAN: EGO AND OTHER TAILS

Episode 66 – Batman: Ego and Other Tails

Welcome to the sixty-sixth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.

This time out Andy and Mike look at the trade paperback Batman: Ego and Other Tails, a criminally underrated collection of stories written and, in most cases, drawn by the late Darwyn Cooke. After a brief discussion over the recent three-hour The Batman film (which Andy has seen and Mike still hasn’t found the time to watch though he wants to) they dig into the collection and talk about the one shot story EgoSelina’s Big Score, and the other one off stories from various anthology titles and Batman comics. The episode devolves into a love letter to Darwyn Cooke as both Andy and Mike have such an appreciation for not only the man’s work but the man himself.

The guys talk about their experiences with the Punisher, their opinions on his actions, the story in question, and how Batman just keeps owning the Punisher in hand-to-hand combat. OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 64 – BATMAN VERSUS PREDATOR

Episode 64 – Batman Versus Predator

Welcome to the sixty-fourth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.

This time out Andy and Mike continue their informal series of episodes looking at Batman stories where he teams up with a character from another fictional universe. In the case of this episode the guys are talking about the first Batman Versus Predator mini-series, which was published between December 1991 and February 1992. This Dark Horse/DC Comics collaboration saw Batman facing off a massive adversary and sustaining substantial injuries during their first big fight and then faces off against said massive adversary wearing wicked cool armor.

That sounds familiar.

Anwyay, Andy and Mike talk about the art and the writing and then go on to discuss their feelings on the various Predator movies that have been coming out since 1987. There is also a bit of a tangent where Mike goes into why he watched the shows he watched as a kid and there is even a discussion about a documentary series about Top of the Pops. You’ll even get to hear the painstaking process the guys go through to plan the subject of their next episode.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 63 – SPAWN/BATMAN

Episode 63 – Spawn/Batman

Welcome to the sixty-third episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.

This time out Andy and Mike continue their informal series of episodes looking at Batman stories where he teams up with a character from another fictional universe.  In 1994, Frank Miller and Todd McFarlane teamed up to produce the first official crossover between Image Comics and DC Comics.  Frank, for good or ill, redefined Batman for the next two, going on three decades.

Todd drew several chapters of Batman: Year Two.

So, they both had at least some experience with the Dark Knight.

Todd also had a creator owned character that was setting the sales charts on fire called Spawn.  So, the two creators teamed up and produced something that could definitely be called a comic book.

Snarky?  Yes, but this comic was hardly Watchmen and it definiely wasn’t The Dark Knight Returns.

Actually, Andy and Mike give the book a fair shake.  They talk about the story, such as it is, and the comic book culture that produced it.  Mike seems to think that part of this episode was therapy because he definitely had conflicted feelings on the story.  The guys laughed.  They cried.  The comic became a part of them.

Not really.  But they had some fun for a little over an hour.

OVERLOOKED DARK KNIGHT EPISODE 62 – BATMAN/CAPTAIN AMERICA

Episode 62 – Batman/Captain America

Welcome to the sixty-second episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.

This time out Andy and Mike continue their informal series of episodes looking at Batman stories where he teams up with a character from another fictional universe.  This time out they look at the Batman/Captain America one shot that was published in December of 1996.  The guys lavish the book with praise and talk about the elements of the story and the artwork that they loved.  After that they read some more listener feedback, including comments left on the Facebook Page.  Finally, they go off on a Dennis Miller style rant about how Batman should (or rather shouldn’t) be portrayed on film, including a discussion on a certain word bomb that was dropped in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Welcome to the sixtieth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about.
