Another one of those posts that happens because something just…occurs to me after looking at an image.
My current computer wallpaper is this.
This is a modified version of the one from the official DC website. The max resolution on my screen is 1280 x 800. At some point in the future I will purchase a separate monitor so I can have a somewhat larger screen and be able to use my boss Superman Returns keyboard but for the moment the resolution is what it is. While this doesn’t bug me in my day to day life when it comes to wallpapers it is problematic. My scanner is not as nice as it should be so making my own is out because I am pretty much a Luddite when it comes to Photoshop beyond cutting, pasting, resizing and the like.
I’m sure things would be just fine and dandy, dandy and fine if I wasn’t so picky about my wallpaper. I can’t just put a cover as the wallpaper and be done with it because I like the thing to go all the way across the screen and not get blocked off too much by the little bar at the bottom of the screen. And I can’t have certain colors on the screen either because they bother my eyes. I have to be able to live with the image, at least for a month or so. If this sounds crazy to you keep in mind I used to spend untold hours redoing my icons and event sound settings and screen savers and wallpapers and even the start up and shut down screens on my Windows 95 machine back in the late nineties. Being picky about the image is the worst I get these days and I am much healthier for it.
So I took that Kingdom Come image from DC’s website, eliminated the top and bottom writing, cut it down to 1280 x 800 and moved the image so it would be mostly centered on my screen. It took all of five minutes to do and I am happy with it for the moment. I especially like the reflection in the table, which admitedly took me a day or two to realize was there.
One aspect of the image that does kind of bug me is the picture of Atom Smasher. I’m sorry, but he looks like he should be at a fetish club. There is nothing wrong with fetish clubs. Whatever floats that boat is fine by me as long as the other party is of age and willing. It just looks out of place with the more standard super-hero outfits he is surrounded by. The argument could be made that Atom Smasher’s costume is based on the original Atom’s outfit, which could be seen as being worn by someone who likes rough trade but in all honesty I look at that costume and see a frustrated weight lifter from the thirties and forties.
Not my favorite version of the costume and the bare legs are kind of funky, but it’s not the worst thing to come out of the Golden Age.
So today when I turned on the computer the wallpaper popped up and I looked at Atom Smasher and a certain bit of movie dialogue appeared as if by magic in my head. I even imagined Superman and Green Lantern saying it at a meeting where they needed Atom Smasher’s assistance. Look at the image and then read the dialogue.
Superman: Get the gimp.
Green Lantern: The gimp’s asleep.
Superman: Well I guess you’re gonna have to wake him up then.
Ah, the comedy possibilities when you mesh Kingdom Come with Pulp Fiction. I’m sure there are more but that is it for the moment.
Oh and if you know of a site that has some nice comic book related wallpapers at 1280 x 800 just leave me a link. Thanks.
