Episode 19: Another Runner In The Dark Knight
Welcome to the nineteenth episode of The Overlooked Dark Knight. The is a non-index index show where the hosts, Andrew Leyland and Michael Bailey, look at Batman comics that rarely, if ever, get talked about. In the first episode of every month they usually talk about Bronze Age Batman stories from the late seventies to early eighties though just about everything is fair game.
This time out things get crazy…Crazy Quilt that is. The Robin villain returns in Batman #316 and while there are holes you can drive a truck through the guys have a lot of fun talking about this story. After all it’s Crazy Quilt…who doesn’t love him? Then in Detective Comics #486 we get a Maxie Zeus story. If you were expecting to hear Andy and Mike talk about the aftermath of the death of the Earth-1 Batwoman prepare to be as disappointed as the guy were because holy crap did this confuse them at first. Sure things happen and stories get shifted and maybe a deadline gets blown but could they have possibly found a worse substitute villain?
On the other hand they could have so we’ll take what we can get.
Below is a gallery of covers and pages from the comics we discussed this time out.
Andy and Mike want your feedback on this episode so they can read it on an upcoming show! You even have options in how you leave your feedback. The most direct way is to leave a comment right here on the site. You can also send all questions, concerns, fears and trepidations to overlookeddarkknight@gmail.com. If you want to subscribe to the show here’s the RSS Feed and the iTunes link. If you use iTunes please leave us a review. Not only will we read that on the air like the other feedback but it really helps the show out.
Next Time: Andy and Mike talk about Batman Adventures #2 and Batman and Robin Adventures #2!
Great show as always gents! I love me some Crazy Quilt! I first met the loudest villain in comics when he tried to get his Robin revenge on Jason Todd in his very first outing in the red and green. Poor kid never had a chance, did he?
A few years later I found the Batman 100 Page Spectacular that reprinted their first clash from the Golden Age, and then this very issue you covered. All of those stories make for a very interesting arc, spread across 5 decades! I almost covered all of these stories (and the animated B&B episode) on a Super Mates for Robin’s 75th anniversary, but changed my mind at the last minute. Glad to hear you discuss it here.
And Crazy Quilt made it into The Lego Batman Movie AND there is now a Lego mini-figure of him as well!!! How ….”crazy” is that?
Maxie Zeus…I don’t like him. He is indeed warmed over King Tut, and its so odd that Denny O’Neil of all people even went to that particular well. I kind of liked his one-off appearance on BTAS, but one was enough.
I too am on the hunt for those Shipp Flash and Kilmer Batman figures. There is also a Lynda Carter Wonder Woman, but apparently she has not made it out into stores yet.
