From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast covers the comic book adventures of Superman starting with Man of Steel #1 (published in July of 1986) and Adventures of Superman #649 (published in March of 2006). The show was Michael’s idea and came about because he really wanted to produce a podcast about his favorite era of Superman. In 2007, Michael had an email exchange with writer/artist Jerry Ordway and when Jerry mentioned that it seemed like people were forgetting his era of Superman, Michael felt that was a shame. After producing the Views From The Longbox podcast for over a year, Michael felt the time was right to get the show going.
Michael had known Jeffrey for several years and asked Jeff to come on board as co-host to make the show more interesting and hold Michael’s feet to the fire when it came to sticking with the show. Fun fact; the two had never actually spoken before recording their first episode. Their communication consisted of emails and talking on AOL Instant Messenger. The show originally launched as “Presented by the Superman Homepage” and Michael and Jeff can’t thank Homepage webmaster Steve Younis enough for giving them such great exposure for the first few years. Eventually, and through no ill will, the “Presented by the Superman Homepage” was dropped from the show and now it is part of the Fortress of Baileytude Podcasting Network.
Over the years the show’s format has changed. Originally, the boys (as Steve Younis used to call them) covered the books one cover month at a time. When they got to the point that they were covering Superman: The Man of Steel, Michael realized that the shows would get way too long if they covered four books an episode, so they split the cover months up over two episodes. That format has more or less stuck until today with minor tweaks along the way.
In addition to talking about the comics, Michael and Jeff have covered the other media Superman appeared in during the course of their mandate. So far, they’ve talked about the syndicated Superboy live action series and Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. They’ve also done commentaries for films inspired by the era they’re covering and have conducted interviews with creators like Marv Wolfman, Jerry Ordway, and Dan Jurgens. They hope to do more of these as the show continues its run.
From Crisis to Crisis has taken a number of hiatuses over the years, normally due to real life getting in the way. Sometimes this is small. Sometimes it’s big. Michael originally said the show would only last five years, but that soon proved to be unrealistic.
